2002-05-27 02:06:00 | Big Thank You to those who responded to my recent post concerning BI and XP. The thinking seems to be 'Have A Firewall' (but not XP's native setup, nor BlackIce). OK - I'm going to <temporarily> ditch BI and set up & test both Tiny and Zonealarm. I'm running XP Pro (and win2000 Pro and NT4), each with a separate Profile for internet connectivity, which has critical services (server etc) turned off & a local uid which has minimal user rights. My question really is - what's wrong with BI as a product for keeping scanners & snoops out? I get lots of alerts, all so far have been firewalled...have people out there experienced particular successfull intrusions (or dangerously close attempts) that BI has failed to firewall?? PLUS - <nearly done> - any tips\advice concerning ZoneAlarm or Tiny that aren't in the help or documentation files?

2002-05-27 02:40:00 | BI works perfectly well as an intrusion detecting system(provided its kept updated). the biggest let down with BI is it lets apps access the net with out checking them(note- i don't know if this is changed in the latest ver). ie if you have a trojen or spyware it will still let it access the net. so much for being a 'wall'. zonealarm is proberly one of the easyest to use ver3 as been somewhat troublesome.(any updates on that people?) tiny is exclent but had a flaw which i hope is fixed by now. it also is(was?) not very easy to use. more suited to techs. sygate has released a new ver not so long ago which would be worth cheaking out. and theres outpost which i'm testing at the moment. seems ok so far, no perfect but still very good.

2002-05-27 05:43:00 | I recommend Outpost <www.agnitum.com but I don't test them extensivly as it sounds like tweak'e does. Last time I used Tiny (now Kerio) it was very good apart from you needed to know a lot to set it up. Norton Personal Firewall I find very good as well. Same with Sygate last time I used that. JM

2002-05-27 06:07:00 | I got increasingly irritated with ZoneAlarm, and changed over to Sygate Personal Firewall. It is simple to use, SEEMS secure (poor deluded fool that I am), and it doesn't annoy me all the time with popups. It just gets on with the job, which is all I want. I checked out my PC network with that website (Gibson??) that checks your security and whilst I didn't get a Stealth rating on all ports, all ports were secure. John

2002-05-27 22:36:00 | Thanks everyone.... Interestingly, I tested with the Gibson Research site (I admit with both BI AND XP's firewall running together) and the result showed that I was completely stealthed (which GRC said was unusual). I thought that this was A Good Thing. I can recommend hackerwhacker.com as well for testing security <although you need a 'real' email address, i.e. not hotmail etc>. I'm now intrigued by this, so will continue to ask Q's as & when necessary and will also post progress\info, good or bad, if anyone's interested.
