50949 2002-05-27 00:22:00 I am looking for a mid to high end games machine. My problem is 512MB of DDR or Rambus? Having lived through the VHS / Beta wars, I don't want to get stuck with a white elephant. Which performs better for gaming?? Will Rambus be around in 2-3 years?

Any advice I have had to date hs been tainted by salesmen trying to hawk their 'wares.

Thanks in advance for any advice....Ralph

50950 2002-05-27 00:56:00 at the moment DDR is king. rambus is set to do a comeback but i'm not sure if DDR is going to have anything new to match it.

ddr is basicly going main stream with sdram starting to die out. the lower latency of ddr makes it far better than rambus.

50951 2002-05-27 01:08:00 I read somewhere that Rambus is better than DDR for the New Pentium 4's. Guest (0)

50953 2002-05-27 02:17:00 I read in PCWorld that Rambus is a high performer but unstable as yet. Guest (0)
50954 2002-05-27 02:20:00 QDR will be the next big thing.

Personally at the moment I'd choose DDR and an AMD Athlon XP 1800+.

But if using a P4 make sure you get one of the Northwood chips. They perform (and overclock) a lot better. I'd probably go with DDR but I know of others that would go with RamBus.

50955 2002-05-27 11:03:00 Get Rambus if you can afford it. 2-3 years time? I wouldn't worry, your PC will likely be worth $150 by then anyway. Check out this link for a quick comparison:
