1301960 2012-09-18 07:18:00 I'm doing some checks then gonna create an image file to save the fuss of redoing it . . .

So . . I disabled the Wifi cards . Using a network cable which I don't think it matters much whether it is straight or crossover b/c hardware tend to compensate for it .

Crossover cable directly - the XP PC cannot see/access - it says limited connectivity . The Win7 laptop can see/access . I copied some stuff across . The Win7 doesn't show any error signs and copies very fast for a 1GBit connection .
If I put in a old router/modem using the same cables it works both ways .

Question - what's up with crossover?

1301961 2012-09-18 09:10:00 Nothing at all. Limited connectivity means that you just can't get onto the internet. Chilling_Silence (9)
1301962 2012-09-18 09:44:00 Isn't it the Internet "No Internet Access" .

The XP PC cannot browse the other computer at all . . . . (shared folders) .
This message dissapears when it is connected to a old modem/router which isn't plugged to the phoneline .

1301963 2012-09-18 09:56:00 Does the new router support auto-MDIX? (it should) KarameaDave (15222)
1301964 2012-09-18 10:08:00 Will go and check. I didn't use the new router much on this setup. I was using the old Dlink. Which worked for sharing LAN files. Crossover cable without a router doesn't work from the XP but does with the Win7. Nomad (952)
1301965 2012-09-18 11:16:00 If you're connecting the two machines directly with a crossover cable and no switch or router then you'll need to set a static ip address on both. CYaBro (73)
1301966 2012-09-18 11:20:00 Limited connectivity in Win XP means no IP (ie. a 169... address), so yes needs a static IP as there is no DHCP server present.

A limited connectivity (yellow exclamation mark) in Windows 7 is means no Internet access (or a DNS issue).

1301967 2012-09-19 00:11:00 I'll look into static IP . . .

Why is that with crossover - Win7 can access but the XP cannot . Both shouldn't be able to right . . Win7 no exclamation, XP does .

If both are Win7, PC can access shared folders but laptop cannot . Both have the sign No Internet Access . But both can access media devices, ie songs .

1301968 2012-09-19 02:23:00 I got it to work now but it seems that dynamic and manual IP both works . . . . The issue was Windows Firewall .
Both Win7 now . . The crossover cable was defined as a public network .

Dynamic, Firewall On
PC can access, but laptop cannot .

Dynamic, Firewall OFF
Both can access .

Manual IP, Firewall ON
PC again could access but laptop could not .

Manual IP, Firewall OFF
Both could access .

Now I just followed this and made my unidentified network (crossover cable has no gateway) so it is a private network . Don't want my crossover to be set as a public network and then have the firewall off in case I use a public network outside . . . It now works with the Firewall turned on

1301969 2012-09-19 03:12:00 Ah, my bad, CYaBro / WarNox are right.

Yeah the Firewalls are a PITA, I turn them off on all PC's and just use a routers NAT to cover me.
