1301250 2012-09-16 00:57:00 Can someone give me a link to a linux live cd download please? I have looked at several sites, but not sure what to actually download.
Also, can the diagnostics on it find hardware/software faults.

No clue about the software on it sorry. Google is your friend. It probably depends on what you think the hardware fault is. I doubt that any one distro will have all the required software to test everything. Unless there is a purpose built one.

1301252 2012-09-16 01:39:00 What version of linux ? there are many. But if you wanted ubuntu, try www.ubuntu.com

Linux on its own is not really diagnostics software, its a OS.

What sort of diagnostics software are you after ?

utilities for data recovery and system repairs, even for other operating systems

Well, I'd heard that it is a good idea to have a linux live bootable cd in case of system crashing and to test memory etc. It's all new to me, but just want to keep up with the play I guess. So, I really just want to know what I need and what to do with it. Does that sound silly at all?

1301255 2012-09-16 07:17:00 I would go for Puppy much smaller download and when it loads it's pretty much all in the RAM so is quite quick too. I have Puppy on a bootable 2Gb flash drive and on a CD gary67 (56)
1301256 2012-09-16 08:57:00 I've been happy with just the window software. I use a live linux CD if I need to boot and delete some tricky partitions and reinstall. There might be a way with the partition software but find it easier with linux. I have also used it to test a USB port for example. With a spare computer. I don't need to install a OS to check if the ports are working. A live CD just quicker. Nomad (952)
1301257 2012-09-16 09:13:00 PartedMagic (partedmagic.com) Good for partitioning and has a range of other software for imaging disks etc.

Caine Live CD (www.caine-live.net) I f you want one with all sorts of diagnostics.

1301259 2012-09-16 10:20:00 Hmmmm....... all sounds a bit complicated. I think I need to learn more about what I want to do and why I would want to do it, before I start messing with those options!
Thanks guys for the info anyway!
