2012-09-14 22:13:00 | Earlier this week, my main Linux harddrive crapped itself. Not sure what the loss is yet, but I know the /boot wont format or do anything. Hopefully I can still get what was on my /home Anyway... I am looking for a new harddrive 1TB - I won't go lower than 500GB; don't need more than 1TB as I have a secondary 1TB drive as well.. Main drive will have OS, /home, and a network filesharing partition (although I might move all data off secondary drive and have that as the file share drive) Now... WD or Seagate? If I go WD - Caviar Blue, Green, or Black? Don't want to be paying more than $160 (so don't suggest the Velocirapter)

2012-09-14 22:29:00 | I don't think the brands really matter, both are tops. I have those brands, all going strong after nearly 4yrs. I had 3x Seagate (500GB), but one of them the plastic SATA connector broke off after some blinded wriggling of the cable harshly. Bought a 500GB WD Black 2yr ago I think and that's fine too, as too are the other 2x Seagates. One of the Seagate had the firmware issue was that was a one off event I think, got a swap. For normal things, I wouldn't mind going for a WD Green or the equiv. Seagate. Ps. We also have a 80GB Seagate from our 2003/04 PC and one from a used Dell both are swell too :)

2012-09-14 23:01:00 | Edit: sorry these are both more than $160 ---- I've been very happy with the Western Digital Velociraptor drive, 10K RPM SATA, for mostly write applications The Seagate Momentus drive is very nice for mostly read applications, 1GB onboard cache

2012-09-14 23:18:00 | I wouldn't go for any of those Green drives from WD OR Seagate. You'll know if it's one because it will have a sub-7200 RPM spindle speed.

2012-09-15 03:15:00 | Did some more reading... went with WD Blue Don't need the noise and speeds of a Black for just desktop computing... Thanks all for the input :)
