1301830 2012-09-18 06:08:00 I found the enclosure.
Its brand new, never used, I remember buying it by mistake (I needed a SATA) and I never got around to sending it back.
If I haven't used it in what, 3-4 years I am not going to so its all yours.

I have divested it of its box because its about 20x bigger than the unit and I will post it as soon as I can
At some point I stole the cable from it to use elsewhere so a cable will be coming to you in a second package.

Its a Vantec Nexstar.3 IDE USB 2.0

Will get this in the post asap.

1301832 2012-09-20 03:08:00 Sometimes , laptops can be a real pain to clone.

If you run into issues...heres some hints
Put the new hd in the laptop & then clone direct from the old HD, rather than an make an image
Sometimes you need to try several Cloning Softwares, to get one that works with you PC. Some occasionally have issues with USB hard drive adaptors, some have issues with recovery partitons, some wont resize to fill the new HD
You may need a partition manger to resize after youre done (Easeus has a good free one)

Free Cloning software that works : ALLWAYS take the manual, not automatic clone option. Sometimes it clones the wrong drive on Auto
Live CD : http://livecd.com/
Maxbast (seagates Acronous tool) , if it complains about the brand of drive, hit ALT T ALT O (tech over-ride)
**Make sure you dont accidently tick to wipe the old drive
easeus Disk copy

All 3 are free to use . When 1 gives a few issues on a particular laptop, one of the other will usually work.
All give the option to make a bootable CD, so make that bootable CD 1st.

Those Digitus adapters mentioned in a previous post are really good.

1301834 2012-09-21 07:49:00 Vantec NexStar.3.

Ok so have the 160GB in the enclosure , connected to the USB outlets as reccommended. It is partitined & I want to have a single drive, & format it to start from scratch before I attempt to Clone to it.

However I cannot format it as E & F drives. Forbiden. This is using XP Home. What do I do next? Thanks. PJ

1301835 2012-09-21 09:36:00 The cloning software is able to delete whatever is on there, no need to partiton or format first. In fact cloning by nature will wipe everything on the target drive.
Using the manual option you can usually resize the partition or cose to keep it the same size as the original, just resize it to the full size. The best option is from a boot CD as 1101 suggested, however Acronis is smart enough to usually work if you install it into windows and run it from there, and that can be the easiest option.

1301836 2012-09-22 01:28:00 OK so I Downloades Acronis. Made a boot disc. Cloned the comp onto the NexStar.Swapped the drives over & booted up the Comp.

Says...MBR Error!
Press any key toboot from floppy.
Put bootable disc in & try again.
Same. What next? PJ

1301837 2012-09-22 03:33:00 It hasn't cloned properly in that case, you could try this helpdeskgeek.com if the MBR is all that's missing it should fix it.
Otherwise try again with the cloning software or try a different one. You shouldn't need to swap the drives back, you could clone from the USB enclosure. Just be careful about which drive you clone to which, you wouldn't want to wipe the one that works by cloning the new one over it.

Ok I have done it again manually. At first the laptop screen said Acronis loading. The NexStar blue light is flashing. Screen is now blank. It has been going about an hour. Screen has an hourglass on it.

How long does it take to complete? How will I know? PJ

1301839 2012-09-22 08:39:00 Personally I wouldn't use Acronis, had a few failures.

As 1101 posted earlier http://livecd.com/ from Active@.
