Not that complicated really! Just download an ISO image, burn it to CD or load it on a pendrive (need proper software to do this), make sure the boot order is correct, boot up and have fun!

1301261 2012-09-17 04:13:00 Hmmmm....... all sounds a bit complicated. I think I need to learn more about what I want to do and why I would want to do it, before I start messing with those options!
Thanks guys for the info anyway!

If all you want is to boot from a CD for Diagnostics purposes, all you need is Hiren's BootCD. It has lot of diagnostic tools and even has LiveXP on it.. It is not Linux, so you don't have to learn anything new. It is based on Free DOS and Windows XP

1301263 2012-09-17 05:11:00 ...and the legality of Hiren's is? ;) Last one I looked at it (11. ? - its now up to 15.1) was around at a estimated guess 75% legit free programs, 25% - not quite so ;) wainuitech (129)
1301264 2012-09-17 05:16:00 And it is not for the faint hearted, would be easy to bork a system with some of the tools on it. KarameaDave (15222)

Sorry about that.
Should have linked to Ultimate BootCD for Windows (www.ubcd4win.com) instead, which one builds themselves using their own Windows XP disk, and is legal.

1301266 2012-09-17 08:23:00 No worries mate :)

I'd ask though, if there's a legit problem, is there something we can help with directly LL, or are you cool just having a play?

1301269 2012-09-19 05:38:00 Here is a link you may want to look into :)
www.sysresccd.org

I am just looking at it b/c it has a free imaging software (linux based) for my XP computer. Acronis doesn't work with my USB keyboard. Thou I did get Acronis for free with those signup limited offers (advised by here). I have used GParted in the past with the older Windows but these days given the free software for Windows not much ie., Windows Systems Image etc.

Now I am gonna teach myself how create image, restore it and do it via a network card boot (handy for netbooks), secure wipe and deal with partitions. Part of the fun, it's free and maybe more flexible too :D

Can be "live" CD boot or USB stick boot. Instructions at the "download" link.
