1277561 2012-05-27 05:30:00 I agree. I don't like being called Pakeha either. Yes, they have changed the meaning since but the old one still exists. Pctek did you start this on purpose?? ChazTheGeek (16619)
1277562 2012-05-28 00:17:00 I'm a little surprised to learn that foreign law has any place in the US courts to begin with, other than extradition treaties I'd expect countries to only apply their own law in any court cases. "But it's not illegal in my country" doesn't seem like a valid defense to me.

And whether or not you find Pakeha offensive is a long way off topic is it not? I don't much care myself, and if it ever meant anything like "white pig" that's not how it's used today. I've never seen any evidence that it actually meant that, seems like an urban legend to me and may or may not have any truth to it. It seems more likely the Idea came from the resentment many Maori felt towards white settlers (and some still do towards their descendants) and the negative emphasis likely to have been put on the word at times.

In english we often use words in ways that have little to do with the literal dictionary meaning, I'm sure that is or has been true of Maori as well (not that they had a dictionary).

1277563 2012-05-28 00:49:00 Not so much as you said. It's: "I demand my constitutional rights" being claimed by illegal aliens who get caught voting, needing legal representation for a crime or driving without a license, registration or insurance.

They have NO rights to make that claim since they are in violation of immigration law in the first place, but the Democrats seeing a huge voting base in them, defends their 'rights' under the constitution.

That's right try calling someone Gay these days as in they danced Gaily down the street, it just means in the literal sense that they are happy and not that they are homosexual

It also might simply be their name! One of my cousins married a Gay and he's still with her after all these years (probably got grandchildren by now), which goes to show how unsafe it is to tag any human being with a pejorative appellation.

1277567 2012-05-28 04:12:00 Back in the day "Pakeha" could have meant anything, considering the culture that coined the term had next to zero understanding of the world around them, minimal language and no ability to keep records, It might as well be gibberish.

I personally think it should be done away with not because I find the terms used by a primitive ignorant people as offensive but because I don't accept its their role to define who I am.
