1277138 2012-05-24 09:44:00 Good budget, just what is required in these austere times.
Well done National government.

You must be joking It's a terrible budget so bad in fact it's a non event, they not taxing anything they have just the poor kids, smokers etc, they should have upped the TAX on alcohol too oh and sold off their spare houses they rent out to their party mates and put that money in the pot.
Yes indeed well done National for selling us down the river, JK and BE are almost as good as Piggy Muldoon

1277139 2012-05-24 10:49:00 pcuser42 you know that they recently said 4yr maxed for student allowances. they now say, all postgraduate students will not be eligible for allowances even within the 4yr period other than if they are doing a honours course. Like if they choose to skip Hons but do a one year Masters ..

they also put a cap on how much pilot students can get a loan for now.
in a way, maybe they have given up on retaining students here. they seems to be placing more efforts in upping the student loan payment amount and gathering monies from other countries off people.

and the one thing that is about to come in force soon is that if you have $500 outstanding (perhaps to the govt) it will block you getting a student loan.

Try your luck at the bank - students always seem to want the tax payer to give them more.

that would be users pays ie., in Canada they have student loans from the govt that requires a gaurantor. on that note, the pension some might argue can be means tested or skipped altogether let alone raising the qualifying age, and/or to introduce medicare. some countries don't have welfare, or that you get it for some months given how long you worked for (by paying taxes).

the thing for me is that they sidestepped a lot of things. ie., reduce the highest tax rate and to balance their books. what about booze, or CGT. seems like smoking (not that I am a smoker) is a soft target.

and the thing with the student allowance for the 4yrs. that means a person could do a bachelors degree (3yrs) so instead of doing a 1yrs Masters they could maybe do a 1yrs Diploma (undergraduate) and get it. which is ..

1277141 2012-05-24 11:55:00 So what? It's an interest-free loan. The bitching and moaning students should suck it up and try paying interest on it, then we'll see who's really crying!

You can never satisfy some people. They complain, the government is likely to whack the interest back on the student loans and stuff up things for those paying off their loans.

1277142 2012-05-25 00:01:00 Taking the assumption that our 4 million population consists of 2 million earners (sorry, those on benefits do not count as earners, despite the token inclusion of taxes on their benefits) (and we have fewer than 2 million true earners), then that 6.5 billion of govt services comes to more than $3,000 per worker.
You need to go further than that in that anyone who works for the govt does not add to the tax pool but just repays tax payers money. You also have not included companies.

1277143 2012-05-25 02:34:00 There was a Budget? Is that what transpired yesterday at 2 pm? So they put the price of ciggies up and taxed a few more people, how very original........

My thoughts exactly.

I really don't understand why people get all antsy about it. Very little has changed, protesting won't change anything, life ticks on, its out of my control, I'll just focus on things that I can actually change.

1277146 2012-05-25 03:39:00 To me it's the approach taken .

I am not against asset sales, or against the principle of having interests on student loans, i had that in the late 90s . Kiddies paying tax is not that bad b/c they have to anyway so it's good habit . Student loans/allowances is a bit goofy . Going from 5yrs to 4yrs not that biggish but it's goofy to say the 4yr cannot be postgrad but can be undergraduate . Student loans from 10-12% is not bad .

But:
Taxing kids is fine as a job is a job but what about CGT .
Taxing ciggies but what about booze .
The goofiness of student allowances .

It seems to be more about strategically protecting their votes - ie . CGT, 65yr super .

And what about welfare . It's not asset tested . And there is no length cap on it . Should they put up with the hurdles they are perfectly entitled for how ever long . And even with pension isn't it that I read NZ is the only OECD nation that does not means test their pensions . I know those who take adv of CGT . Bought a extra property and at retirement sold it , gained hundreds of thousands .
