| 1276805 | 2012-05-22 13:12:00 | Basically they've oversubscribed their ADSL user-base. You're kinda on the money there Metla, the problem is you'll be fast from you to the Cabinet or Exchange nearby. From there, depending on what kind of a connection Telstraclear have, they're likely paying XYZ rate to Telecom Wholesale (Around $20 a month). From there they're going to be backhauling your data to their main data center where all the data for the whole country (Or at least the North Island usually) comes back to. From there, they're again likely oversubscribing their international bandwidth. For example, imagine having 30000 homes all share a 1gigabit connection. What happens is things clear up during non-peak hours during the day, and they then get worse and worse progressively as the day draws on, starting around 5PM. Users try and download more, and pump more through their international circuits, so things get backed up (Ping / Latency is increased), packets get lost or arrive out of order (packet loss / jitter), and overall your browsing experience turns to %@#$. Unfortunately for $75 a month, Telstraclear are likely not even making a profit, and they're going to be oversubscribing their bandwidth like you wouldn't believe too! (Well maybe you would believe, given your current connection state). As a consumer the goods / service they are offering you is not fit for the purpose for which it was intended, and under the CGA you're entitled to go elsewhere, and if they don't wanna play ball then the Telecommunications Dispute Resolution Service would be more than happy to step in on your behalf and side with you (I've dealt with them before, they're not very technical, but a friendly bunch). All I can say is: Good luck! |

| 1276807 | 2012-05-22 13:57:00 | Nah for the better part they won't care and will just let you go. It's easier. Otherwise if they buy too much international bandwidth it's no longer profitable, or if they're not actually making a profit (And just building up their customer base) then they'll make even more of a loss... | Chilling_Silence (9) | ||

| 1276809 | 2012-05-22 23:10:00 | Get her to jump onboard Orcons $99 for 200GB Naked DSL plans then. Their Genius Routers are "OK", but for a very small < 4 device network, it does the trick and it's all auto-provisioned. | Chilling_Silence (9) | ||

I thought all feeds were upgraded when the hardware was put in place, My xnet connection just got faster and faster. I was with xnet for a few years and never changed the package I was on, Though I did remove the 10GB cap when we started blowing it every month. My kids are always dealing to our 40gb cap, pretty sure they will wax the 80gb telekom has given us starting next week. |
