1301820 2012-09-18 01:27:00 Hi All...Desade has sent me a 160GB HD to replace the 40GB one in my Toshiba laptop

How do I physically clone it? Thanks. PJ

1301821 2012-09-18 01:51:00 That's nice of him. :)

Is it a SATA or IDE hard drive?

Do you have an external enclosure or adapter that plugs in via USB? Something like this (www.ascent.co.nz)or this (www.ascent.co.nz).

Have neither of those things.

1301823 2012-09-18 01:58:00 Its a IDE to match the specs of the old HDD DeSade (984)
1301824 2012-09-18 02:01:00 Right, sweet.

If you want to clone, you'll either need to buy something like what I have linked to in the first post (they can be useful for all sorts of other things too) or take it to a friendly local PC repairer and get them to clone the drive for you. (Would think around $30 - $40 would be a reasonable charge for this)

This would be your best bet if you want to do it yourself.

1301825 2012-09-18 02:02:00 Or pick up a cheap enclosure and use it as is, as a external drive for extra storage.
hmmmm Now I mention it, I might have one of those myself, will look tonight.

1301828 2012-09-18 04:28:00 Buy yourself a 2.5 case as you can use it for your old 40gb anyway afterwards

Just image your old drive with something like Acronis/Macrium or similar, send to the new drive in the case then swap them over when complete

1301829 2012-09-18 04:39:00 For a one off or occasional use the manufacturers tools will do the Job, once you have a way to connect them both obviously.
Both WD and seagate have a Cloning tool available on their websites that only requires at least one drive of theirs to be connected to work.
I think it's just a cut down version of Acronis but it does the Job. There are other free alternatives around if you prefer.

I just used the WD version to clone onto my new Samsung SSD because samsung didn't provide any tools for the job.
Nothing to lose but time providing you never delete the original until you are certain the new one is working correctly.

Install Acronis
connect new drive using some kind of external enclosure or similar
Run acronis and tell it to clone the hard drive
wait until it finishes, swap the hard drives, put the old one somewhere safe for a week or two
