51251 2002-05-28 06:15:00 When starting up Windows98 after the anti-virus screen I get 'the black screen' with a couple of lines of text and the bottom ones read:'VORTEX Dos audio driver (3.007) copyright (c) 1997 - 1999 Aureal Semiconductor.
BIOS ERROR #8: BIOS PNP hasn't configured sound chip. Set PnP OS to NO in Bios'. How does one set pnp (plug 'n play??) to no in bios?
This has been going on every time I start the computer for about six weeks. The only thing wrong with my system that I can see is that half of the time my desktop configuration has changed to a larger font. It is easy to change it back to 800 x 600 but then I also have to shift all my folders back in place which is becoming a bit of a nuisance. The only other problem is that sometimes the browser 'hangs' for about 8 seconds, mostly when at Hotmail, but I put that down to network problems. As you can tell, this computing is relatively new to me so plain language only please.

51252 2002-05-28 08:40:00 Firstly, the BIOS change is normally easy. Most computers on startup have an option to push F2 for SETUP. Do this. This will present you with a CMOS/BIOS screen. The option you are looking for is often found under PCI/ISA Integrated Peripherals. Go into this option and one f the settings wil be: PNP OS and will have a Yes next to it. The instructions at the bottom of the screen will tell you which key to press to change, but often it's a case of moving the arrow keys until the Yes is highlighted, and then pressing the + or -. Once this is done, press Esc to go back to the main screen then Save Setting and Exit.
2. You say that the screen size changes. Does it go to 640x480? if so you may have corrupt or incorrect video drivers installed. These can usually be updates from the Internet, or from your friendly supplier.
3. Yes, it can take a while for services like Hotmail to authenticate - it's abit like the 20-40seconds it takes to log onto the Internet.
Hope this helps.

51253 2002-06-03 20:23:00 Thanks for your comments Derek, unfortunately it must be something else. It took a few days to discover hat to get into bios on my machine you have to press ctrl/esc. followed your instructions to the letter and two items found related to pnp and oth were disabled already. Went through every bios option and reset everything to default to be sure. No difference. Also had advice to physically remove the soundcard from the tower, restart (the last line changed from 'set pnp etc' to 'no sound card detected' or something like that. Then re-installed the card in the recommended fashion, and we are back to the same old thing. There was no expected 'windows has detected new hardware and is installing a driver for it'. It is going to be a pain, but would re-installing windows (while saving files etc) fix it for sure? If that surely fixes it I wouln'd mind but it takes ages to get all the programs and everything back in order. Guest (0)
