51145 2002-05-27 22:07:00 Could someone please tell me how to convert a document created on an Apple Mac so that it can be read in MS Word

Also can it be done the other way round?

Thanks in advance

In the absence of having MS Word for Mac you can always type the document in Clarisworks.

MS Word is able to read Clarisworks documents (I'm not sure if you need to tell Clarisworks to save as a word document, but it should work anyway).

MS Word can save documents as Clarisworks documents too, so yes, it does work the other way too.

This might only apply to MS Word 97 and later, but I imagine you're speaking at least about Word 97 anyway.

In addition to the correct advice given to you by Callum, you may need to use a PC formatted floppy disk to save the document to, rather than a Mac formatted disk, as some PCs won't read Mac disks (although I've never had trouble with it, I know some who have).

51148 2002-05-28 05:22:00 Ahem, I think Mike means 'PC format disks formatted on a PC, rather than disks formatted as PC format on a Mac'. PCs consistently *can't* read Mac GCR format disks. Guest (0)
51149 2002-05-28 06:32:00 Assuming you get the document into your PC somehow, either via a PC formatted disk, or emailed attachment for example, there is no problem. I do it all the time, because I have heaps of Mac docs on my PC - I was forced by my unenlightened customers to give up my Mac and move to the Dark Side of the Force, so I have lots of archive stuff that I still use from time to time.

The document will show on your PC with a generic icon, and clicking on it will probably get you nowhere. The PC will not know which programme to open it with.

However, if you open Word on the PC, and use the Open command and navigate to the file in question (you may need to check All files to see the doc in its directory), the PC version of Word will open the Mac version. You can then Save As in the PC format you want. Voila.

Another way is to save the doc on the Mac as an .rtf file and then transfer to the PC, and that will work too.

Software called TransMac will also allow your PC to open a Mac volume (eg a Mac formatted CD; probably Mac formatted floppies as well, but I haven't tried it with floppies). You will be able to find TransMac on Tucows probably, and it can be used as trial ware at least for the doc you are concerned with at the moment.

51150 2002-05-28 06:40:00 PS I should have also completed the reply to your question, and said that yes, you can certainly do it the other way round, because Macs can do anything!

A Mac will read a PC formatted floppy for example, or again it will open a PC derived email attachment such as a .doc or .rtf file. It depends upon how the Mac owner has set up ?PC Exchange ?File Exchange (can't remember the name of the Control Panel now) whether or not it will open a .doc filetype by double clicking on the icon for the doc. If not just go to Word and open it as described in my earlier post, and then 'Save as...' whichever type of file you want on the Mac.

There will be some subtle changes between the PC and Mac versions that may throw out your formatting - fonts for example are not identical, and they may throw out your page breaks etc. Going either way, you may need to reformat your document to make it look the way you want.
