51290 2002-05-28 10:40:00 When I load gamespy arcade to play an online game of Unreal Tournament, gamespy informs me that my computer's internal IP address is different to my external IP address - as in I have a firewall or a proxy running. I don't THINK I have one running, and my ISP assures me that within NZ they do not use one either. This badly affects my 'ping' in online games and makes them unplayable.
Can anyone help with this issue?
Thanks muchly.

51291 2002-05-28 11:27:00 your right! it's your ISP's proxy farse!

What is your ISP?

problem, thier aint enough IP addresses to go round, (apparantly) Xtra, and others have found ways of sharing an IP address, not to disimilar to how we might have a private network (10.0.0.1, 10.0.0.2) etc all sharing one IP addy to the internet at large via whatever gateway/proxy we set up.

I first got a clue this was going on when a friends son got a message saying far too much activity from xxx.xxx.xx.x access denied, while uploading to an angelfire ftp server

This IP 203.96.111.200 belongs to xtra, they will at any one time have hundreds of people on it. If you have a webcounter or server stats on any NZ orientated site, you will see it again and again!

51292 2002-05-28 11:36:00 grrrr! The cads!

What good is an ISP to me if I can't get the service I want?!

I have an IHUG connection, but I just joined a smaller ISP from AUCKLAND called Quicksilver, to take advantage of low cost flat rate internet.

Do you or anyone know of an ISP that doesn't do this sharing of IP addresses?

51293 2002-05-28 11:57:00 An interesting tool for you would be whatismyip.com
mine is always the same cause i'm on a cable modem. One of the things i will say in favour of ihug, is that i think they have enough IP's to go around (this may have changed)I was with ihug once and saw nothing to suggest otherwise.

as a matter of interest, how are you working out your 'given' IP?
i would like to have that tool, it would be useful when playing on dial up comps.

51294 2002-05-29 06:58:00 Thanks for the tip, I'll visit that site and start keeping tabs on my apparently wayward IP address :)

Gamespy Arcade simply popped up a warning as it loaded, telling me both what my internal address was and my external one - nifty huh?

Download at www.gamespy.com
