51295 2002-05-28 10:14:00 Everyone knows that sooner or later C drive is for one reason or another going to have be reformatted and the O.S. reinstalled and then the tedious job of reinstalling all your printer/scanner etc. drives. Then comes your directx, media players, installing and updating anti virus definitions add nauseam,
then why is it that I havent seen advocated that once a reinstal and all the updates have been made, that a ghost image be made to another drive if you have one or to a partion on your main drive ?.Running X98SE with the basics as listed above is around 1 gig.,and ghosting it back from image to C drive would be a breeze and your left with a bit of updating or is this too simplistic.

51296 2002-05-28 10:33:00 Bob that is exactly what some people do.

51297 2002-05-28 12:11:00 When you say 'ghosting', does that mean copying and pasteing the Windows folder to a separate partition or drive? Or is it more complicated than that?
Cheers Ken.

51298 2002-05-28 12:58:00 Hi Bob M,

You say 'Everyone knows that sooner or later C drive is for one reason or another going to have be reformatted and the O.S. reinstalled' etc. Why?

As someone else once said, 'If you have a faulty spark plug, you dont replace the engine.'

51299 2002-05-28 13:26:00 I picked up the Australian copy of PC world (sadly, much better than the New Zealand version) and that is exactly what they advised - partion, ghost and burn backups to CD! In the article it discusses how the guy in charge of making their CD keeps his computers stable and fully restored. He said he can restore a system in 5 minutes. Guest (0)

51301 2002-05-28 20:00:00 Thanks Bob,

Something else I didn't know. I had heard the word 'Ghost' used before but I had no idea what it was used for. I have yet to format my computer of nearly one year but have been tempted to due to my tinkering. But as mentioned earlier 'If you have a faulty spark plug, you don't change the engine' so I normally soldier on and find the solution. I have no doubt that I will eventually have to reformat one day so appreciate the advice to 'ghost' my puter. I may start investigatng software to help with this.

I guess reading your post again the tone I get is that you are saying why don't people mention ghosting while giving advice about reformatting.I beg to ask why aren't YOU promoting it's use more. I have seen previous posts/replies about formatting / reformatting and you are correct, not much mention of 'ghosting'. I for one would rather be overinformed and therefore can make more informed decision than finding out later and be peeved that no one told me earlier.
I would be keen to hear how to 'partition' and ghost back to C: drive etc, etc. Sounds difficult but so was turning on the computer nearly one year ago.

I want to thank you again Bob for bringing yet another another stream that I can learn from whilst enjoying the experience of my computer.

51302 2002-05-28 21:12:00 I'm a great advocate for using hard drives mounted in plug-in caddies as the basis for hard drive back-up. It's so easy to do. If you have a program like Symantecs' Ghost (which was originally a NZ program BTW, before Symantec/Norton bought it up),
or PowerQuests Drive Copy or Drive Image, then a weekly backup is a good way to go.

Said this before too, not all agree though.. if you keep the system clean, system files and registry, there shouldnt be any need to keep re-installing. My Win98SE has not been re-installed from the CD since SE first came out, and its been through several motherboards and hard drives, monitors and other hardware, and umpteen program loads and uninstalls.

I accept that if someone has a problem they cant resolve then a re-install is the only way for them.
Here's where Press F1 can help :)

51304 2002-05-29 11:47:00 In answer to your question Sam m regarding me promoting ghost, I have just become aware of it myself and I thought what a great bit of software, it seems too good to be true hence my posting inquiry. Running a Pent.233 with 4.2 and 1.6 gig drives, I dont have the resources for Go Back and some of the other remedial apps., so with 5 year old
grandsons switching off my PC at the wall because one of the others won't get off when his time is up, and with all the rubbish one is left with after years of un and installing (call me old fashioned if you like)(well I am 67 so you can),I figured Ghost would have to be a great timesaver when I reformat again. Cheers Bob
