51380 2002-05-29 04:34:00 Hi Susan and Other Readers,
As to the wee problem of FindFast,Not yet given up.
Been doing a little research on the net from a site that my sons tutor gave me.As follows:
Press Ctrl-Alt-Del with nothing else running and this is what shows up,PopUp Killer/
Address/Zonealarm/Hpzstatx/Avgcc32/Msmsgs/Loadqm/Memzipt/Systray/Minilog.
So from this does it mean that Findfast is not running on Startup. (Hpzstatx/ Loadqm/Minilog) have me a little confused, can you shed any light.
Also can I remove Findfast with the MS Office CD. I also found out that by clicking <Start/Run> and then typing <MSCONFIG> and clicking on the Startup tab, FindFast should be in the list. But hey it's not there.Another scenario, 'Start/Settings/Control Panel and double click on FindFast'.
A box appears stating 'The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-Rom or other removable disk that is not available'.
Insert the' Microsoft Word 2000' disk and click OK. But seeing as that's not my intention, I clicked Cancel.
Next box 'Error 1706, No valid source could be found for product Microsoft Word 2000'. The Windows installer cannot continue. OK.
Next box 'Unable to launch FindFast.EXE. OK.
Pressed OK and then typed this out.
So it would appear that FindFast is on computer in Icon only, or am I just getting paranoid.
Next :
After I have been on the net, and I have got a few Cookies and Temp Files, Do I;
1. Delete them from Windows Explorer,
2. Run Spider 1.16
3. From Dos
Now deleting from Windows explorer, is this the best way or a way.
I open the <Spider Bite> and a message appears saying 'Spider Bite cannot remove the hidden URL'.
Also with Spider when I run the program its quick and easy, I click on the magnifying glass with a red + on it (Search Starts). Its now scaning Windows folders for files.
When thats done I get anything from fifty to hundreds of files that its found. I press the ambulance icon and do the cleanup. I press all options expect the bottom one, (so as to check afterwards to see what its done).
After rebooting, I check to see if the files are gone and 8-9 times out of 10 they are, but not always.
I can delete all from the Internet Option in Control Panel,
From DOS the temp files remain, but all others have gone. Next problem, Under Windows I have a Folder called Profiles and in that Folder there is several Folders eg:
Dave/Applications/Desktop/History under History there is two Folders Tuesday and Today, I click on Tuesday and their are places I vistited on Tuesday.
How come with all this deleting they dont go as well, as the other Temp/ Temperory Internet Files/ Cookies.

If u are wondering about the Dave name funny thing, hardly been used for thirty odd years, thats one reason for the nz after merlin, so there is no confict.

51381 2002-05-29 05:41:00 MerlinNZ, I have just quickly copy/pasted below a couple of your startup ?

Hpzstatx -

Nightmarish Printer Status Monitor task which is installed by the setup program of many HP DeskJet printers when installing on a Windows 9x/ME PC. HPZSTATX does not get installed if you install your printer via the 'Add Printer' icon in the Printers Panel ? it only gets installed if you run the HP setup program. Everything that HPZSTATX does, it does badly : it uses too many system resources, and, worse, it frequently 'hangs' the printing of documents with, in most cases, only a reboot solving the problem. This is twisted ! A printer manufacturer producing a buggy piece of software which so often prevents the user from.... printing !!!

Recommendation :
If you have been experiencing printing jobs not coming out, get rid of HPZSTATX using one of the following methods : either delete HPZSTATX.EXE from the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder, or disable it in Startup Manager.

Minilog -

Alert logger task for the Zone Alarm Internet firewall. This task creates and updates the log of intruder attacks. This task is only started if you select the 'Log alerts to text file' option in Zone Alarm.

Recommendation :
Deselect 'Log alerts to text file' in Zone Alarm if you do not want this task and you have no special need for intruder alerts to be logged. Do not under any event manage this background task using either Startup Manager or MSConfig, as it can result in interminably slow Internet access if you have 'Log alerts to text file' selected but you have at the same time prevented this task from starting using either Startup Manager or MSConfig.

51382 2002-05-29 09:19:00 Gordon,

Thanx for the info, have unticked the Log alerts in ZA, there even seems to be an improvement in the speed of my computer.
As for the 'HPZSTATX' problem, do i go into Windows Explorer for C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder and delete the appliction file, which is 156KB in size.

51383 2002-05-29 09:38:00 Hi Merlin,

Gordon's advice is timely as I wouldn't have been able to advise on that. From his information yes, you just delete the file as you have described. Leave it in your Recycle Bin for a couple of weeks just in case though.

The Loadqm is something to do with MSN:

'Loads the MSN Explorer Query Manager - a waste of resources and bandwidth. Also installed by the latest version of MSN Messenger. Note that disabling this can sometimes prevent internet sharing working on Win2K Pro SP2. Reports also suggest that removing it will re-enable internet access - hence the 'users choice' recommendation. If you have problems leave it, otherwise I recommend you disable it'

I've got mine disabled with no ill effects. You can untick it in the MSCONFIG Startup menu.

The Msmsgs is also related to MSN Messenger and starts MSN when you start your computer. If you don't want it to do that, in MSN go to Tools | Options | Preferences and untick the 'Run this program when Windows starts'.

Regarding FindFast, we pretty much knocked it out last week through DOS but I believe there are a few stragglers lurking in your system. For those, do a search for findfast in Windows and when they come up, highlight them and delete them.

No need to get too worried about the cookies and temp files after browsing. What I do is run Spider every three or four days and clean them all out that way.

I have been told that the 'correct' method to delete temp files and cookies is by closing OE and IE and going to the Internet Options in the Control Panel. Under the General tab click on Delete Files to delete temp files, then click on Settings | View Files. You will see a list of your cookies in there and can choose which to delete. Some of them you may wish to keep as they hold your preferences for webpages you visit often or subscribe to. For instance, when the new Press F1 forum starts you will want to keep the cookie for that webpage so you can log in to make posts.

Now, it is all very well deleting the temp files and cookies as I have described above, but that method *won't* get rid of the Hidden files that the Riddler told us about. You can only get rid of those through DOS like I instructed you the other day, or by using Spider. Using Spider is the easiest way to do it.

If you are having problems with Spider being unable to remove the hidden URL then maybe you still have OE or IE open? You must close them first. If it still doesn't work, then reboot and try again. If some files are still there don't worry about it. You can rerun Spider again if you wish, otherwise it will deal with them next time. But if it still keeps happening, do the DOS exercise.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'From DOS the temp files remain, but all others have gone'. If they haven't gone then you haven't deleted the Temp file. You really need to be careful when you're in DOS so as not to delete the wrong ones.

I'm not familiar with Profiles but at a guess, probably you have a User Profile set up for Dave and the settings for that profile is stored in a different folder to the usual temp, history and cookies files. Maybe that is related to the temp files still remaining in Spider?? You will have to make a new post asking for help on that one if you wish to delete the Dave profile as I can't advise on that one.

Hopefully I've managed to answer all your questions clearly enough. It's good to see that you're making the effort to keep your PC running sweetly :-)

51384 2002-05-29 09:56:00 Sounds like you need to install it properly, then control panel > findfast, exit and disable option, not just exit. Guest (0)
