2002-05-30 01:02:00 I have an Acer Travelmate 510 series laptop fitted with a Pentium IIPE 300Mhz processor. According to windows system information, and several 3rd party system analysis tools, the CPU is running at 150Mhz with a FSB of 33mhz instead of 66mhz. Why has it dropped the FSB in half? Previously it was identified correctly, and then for some reason it has changed. Could this be faulty reporting? In the actual computer bios the CPU is correctly identified, but as the bios is so basic there is no option to alter the FSB. I have searched for a bios flash update, and discovered one on the Acer support website dated about 6 months newer than my current bios. All well & good I thought. I attempted to flash the bios and it insists that the flash is older than the current one and I should not proceed. Any thoughts would be much appreciated!!! The machine itself seems to run ok, but surely a drop in FSB by 50% would mean this isnt running at its potential? Guest (0)
2002-05-30 01:20:00 Hi Jamie..

Just a thought, does it have power saving features enabled, as stepping down the frequency would have a major impact on battery life, maybe its a *feature* you need to disable?

2002-05-30 12:10:00 Thanks for your help Trevor. I admit I didnt even think of the power management system knocking the hardware down to save battery life. Next question... do you have any idea how I can alter this? I disabled advanced power management in the bios with no effect. It seems windows manages this stuff itself. I have hunted through the power options etc, but cant see any options that would have the effect of dropping the FSB. I would have thought windows would have wound the FSB back up when using mains power, but it stays the same 150Mhz all the time. Btw its running win2k Pro. Thanks again for your help :-) Guest (0)
2002-06-30 08:59:00 Resolved! Turns out the problem relates to windows 2000 Pro and the way it gathers information about the computer. Put the laptop back to win98se and all info is correctly reported again. Nutha useful feature.... Anyways thought I'd let anyone reading this know in case of similar problems - dont worry - hardware is fine - its a windows feature :-) Prodigy (428)
