51477 2002-05-29 11:57:00 For all you KaZaA users out there, I have received a welcome email from one of my regular readers notifying me of a new virus worm that is transported disguised as an array of popular music or videos. Read more below:
A worm that drives hits to a website, of course. Dubbed by various antivirus vendors as Worm.Kazaa.Benja or W32/Benjamin, the Benjamin worm disguises itself as an array of popular music and video selections. Unsuspecting KaZaA users who search on one of these topics will be presented with a file list of appropriate titles that aren't legitimate files but rather the Benjamin worm. When the file is downloaded and run, users will be presented with a fake error message:
Access error #03A:94574: Invalid pointer operation
File possibly corrupted.
Behind the scenes, the worm is busy creating a new file share folder and adding hundreds of copies of itself - all with fake titles of popular search requests. Antivirus vendor F-Secure <antivirus.about.com reports that over 2000 titles are used. Examples include:
'Deepest Purple-The Very Best of Deep Purple - Smoke on the Water'
'Metallica - Until it sleeps'
'Johann Sebastian Bach - Brandenburg Concerto No 4'
'South Park Vol.3-divx-full-downloader'
'Star wars Episode 1-divx-full-downloader'
'F1 Racing Championship-Games-full-downloader'
'Chessmaster 8000-Games-full-downloader'
'Apparently the worm was written to make money for the virus writer', comments Mikko Hypponen, Manager of Anti-Virus Research at F-Secure Corporation. The worm opens a webpage named benjamin.xww.de which contained advertisments. 'Now the page has been taken down, but if the virus author got money based on ad views, he might have created some cashflow here'.
After displaying the false error message, Benjamin creates a copy of itself named EXPLORER.SCR in the Windows\System direction and modifies the registry to load on startup.
According to F-Secure, the Benjamin worm spreads only to and from computers that have the KaZaa network clients software installed.
You can read the full story on the worm and how to remove it here <antivirus.about.com Thanks again to Ian Meinert for the pointer.

Valve Software has sent word of new patches for Half-Life and Counter-Strike in the coming weeks. Here's the first detail on the patches:
New client and server updates for Half-Life and Counter-Strike are in the final phases of development and will be released in the coming weeks. Both updates (Half-Life 1.1.1.0 and C.S. 1.5) include the Ricochet Mod, phase two of the recently introduced anti-cheat technology, as well as various fixes and tweaks. The Ricochet Mod source, which includes animation blending and multi-serve technology, will be added to the Half-Life SDK. In addition, Counter-Strike 1.5 includes de_piranesi, a new mission created by Iikka Keranen.

here are some details on the upcoming UT2003 demo that were posted on the Epic messageboard:
1) What build version of UT2003 was being displayed at E3?

The latest one compiled just before E3. This was the first build I saw with a working Ion Cannon which is a ton of fun to use! What we showed on the show floor is essentially what we think the demo will be which consists of two DM maps (Antalus and Curse3), one Double Domination map (Suntemple), one CTF map (Chrome) and one Bombing Run map (Endagra). But, be warned, this could change. I don't believe there are any plans for a single player campaign for the demo.

2) What features were missing from the E3 build that will be added to the demo release?

The major ones I can think of would be the final server browser and stats tracking.

3) Approx how long has been allocated for feedback from the demo before finalising the retail code?

There is no particular amount of time being allocated for this. The response we get will determine how much needs to be done and whether or not we need to release another version of the demo before going final or not.

4) Are there any plans to release the server code to admins in advance of the demo release so that there will be some decent servers available to play on ?

No, not that I'm aware of. Once the demo is ready, it's ready and we don't want to be holding it back. I suspect it will take us a few more days after the Windows release to get the Linux server released.

Samsung has unveiled that they have developed new DDR technology in the form of DDR II SDRAM. Here's some of the stuff from the press release:

Seoul, Korea - May 28, 2002: Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., the world's leader in advanced semiconductor memory technology, today announced the industry's first DDR-II device, a high-density 512Mb DDR-II SDRAM, that it expects to be the next-generation mainstream DRAM technology for high-speed systems. Samsung's 512Mb DDR-II SDRAM fully satisfies the JEDEC DDR-II standard set in March 2002. The device has a low 1.8-volt Vdd and has data transfer rates of 533Mbps that can be extended to a maximum of 667Mbps for networks and special system environments. With the availability of Samsung's new 512Mb DDR-II SDRAM device, high-speed, performance-enhanced, next-generation memory designs are now a reality.

xTech NET <www.xtechnet.net have published a guide on how to performance a DirectX 9.0 Beta 1 Uninstallation for Windows XP and .NET. Here's what they have said:
Excellent news guys! GxV, a user @ #betas, has custom-created a package for uninstalling DirectX 9.0 on Windows XP and .NET platforms. This is nice because now we have a DirectX 9 uninstallation package for Windows 2000, XP, and .NET.
It's gets better folks. GxV also has registry scripts to enable and disable DX8.1 detection. What this does it fool Windows (which in turn fools applications) into thinking DirectX 8.1 is still installed, eliminating any compatibility issues one may have. Whoo hoo!
