51762 2002-05-31 10:13:00 Have a system with 256MB RAM and I just set the swap file to 768MB initial and 768MB max, is this correct or should I have the max larger?
I set it to 3x my systems ram as advised by http://www.thetechguide.com

51764 2002-05-31 10:46:00 The problem with setting it to X times your ram is that you don't need as much swap when you have more ram so its a waste of space.

You won't need 700mb of swapspace running desktop apps/games.

If you are running win98/ME you can get an estimate of how much your averaging by looking at the size of C:\WINDOWS\WIN386.SWP.

I've got 256mb and I rarely use more that about 20mb of swap (with the exception of operation flashpoint, ~150mb).

My recomendation would be to set the minumum to about 100mb and leave the upper size unset incase you run something particulally large (windows apps tend to handle running out of memory badly).

51765 2002-05-31 10:55:00 don't set a max swap file size just a minimum size and make it slightly bigger than what you regurly use. i have 512 meg ram + 200 mininmum swap and use 100-150 swap most days. Guest (0)
51766 2002-05-31 11:12:00 The reasoning behind my large swap file is to run Adobe Photoshop 7.0 as fast as I can. It was taking about 30 seconds to fill an object or about 1 minute 30 seconds to use liquify. After I have changed it photoshop has been running at the speed i was used to. Guest (0)
51767 2002-05-31 11:17:00 hey tweake it wont let me not set a max. It says I have to insert a numeric value. Guest (0)
51768 2002-06-01 01:00:00 leave it as is, or go down a bit but leave both values max and min the same size this avoids defragmentation on your disk data remember to defrag weekly or more often if you delete lots of files at once. Guest (0)
51769 2002-06-01 01:27:00 no way. don't have a max otherwise you will run into out of memory errors. having a big enough min size will stop defragmention. if you constantly go over the min size then increase it to suit. Guest (0)
