51633 2002-05-30 13:12:00 In an interesting twist Creative Labs has purchased a 60% share of THX for $US8,000,000. here's a little bit of detail on what THX is all about:
The THX division of LucasFilm is responsible for schemes as diverse as commercial theatre alignment, hardware licensing (both commercial & domestic), playback technology development and software certification. The THX Theatre Program works with the exhibition and post-production community around the world to deliver the ultimate cinema experience by building certified theatres that adhere to comprehensive & proprietary THX standards & in the last few months, THX has expanded this program to incorporate digital cinema presentation.

3DXtreme <www.3dxtreme.org> has published a Guide to building your own PC <http: This is a particularly good guide if you are new to computers. Check this snip:
Ever wanted to build that dream machine but weren't quite sure how? Today I am going to be stepping you through the process of building what I would consider to be a high performance rig with some of the bells and whistles even I haven't installed into my own computer. This computer is a job I did for a friend of mine. He wanted a computer that would perform like something I would use...keep in mind he is an ex-Macintosh user and has been running OEM systems like Compaq and Gateway.

Intel has announced that their new 64bit Itanium2 processor will run nearly twice as fast as its predecessor, the first Itanium CPU. The newcomer is expected to be able to compete with Sun Microsystems and IBM. According to Intel, the Itanium2 performance is 1.7-2.6 times faster than that of Itanium 800MHz with 4MB L3 cache. Also, the Itanium2 is about 1.5 times faster than Sun UltraSparc III 1050MHz during transaction of large data packs. For those that are hot for tech specs, the Itanium2 will feature 3MB L3 cache and will work at 1GHz core clock frequency. The frequency of MacKinley system bus will make 400MHz and its width will be 128bit.
The memory subsystem performance will make from 6.4GB/sec to 12.8GB/sec depending on the chipset. E8870 from Intel will be able to transfer up to 6.4GB/sec (compared with 4.2GB/sec by i460GX), while more progressive zxl analogues from Hewlett-Packard will be able to provide 8.6GB/sec for dual-processor servers and up to 12.8GB/sec for four-way Itanium2 servers.

Fix for the CoolDVD region code to work with CoolDVD v2.40
New buttons to Register/Unregister the PowerDVD DirectShow filters.
Slight change to the mechanics of the WinDVD reset region function.
Two Additional Audio Range values for WinDVD, try them out.
New button on the PowerDVD tab to get the version of the PowerDVD DirectShow filters.
Compatibility fixes to make WinDVD 4.xx settings work.

Msnbc.com has talked to id Software co-founder John Carmack and Tim Willits about Doom III and the fact that the game was demonstrated on the latest ATI graphics card rather than a card from NVidia. Here's a byte from the interview:
According to Carmack, the man who designed the game engines for the various versions of Castle Wolfenstein 3Ds, Dooms, and Quakes, the startlingly realistic environs of Doom III were not possible until new developments in computer hardware opened the proverbial door.

Doom III is very much hardware driven, and one of the controversies of this year?s E3 was that the game
'NVidia has been stellar in terms of driver quality and support and doing all of the things right,' said Carmack, who has been an outspoken evangelist for Nvidia's GeForce technology. 'For the past few years, they have been able to consistently outplay ATI on every front. The problem is that they are about one-half step out of synch with the hardware generation because they did Xbox instead of focusing everything on their next board. So they are a little bit behind ATI.'
'I told everyone that I was going to demonstrate Doom III on the best hardware, and there has been no collusion or kickbacks or anything like that going on. Our objective is the technical merit.'
'The new ATI card was clearly superior. I don't want to ding Nvidia for anything because Nvidia has done everything they possibly could; but in every test we ran, ATI was faster.'

ZD Net has published and article <zdnet.com.com documenting the push by record companies and other agencies to put unique identifiers on every CD and DVD produced so that the source of counterfeits can be tracked. This is similar to what Intel tried to do with a processor serial number sometime back. Have a look at the proposal and judge for yourself.

51635 2002-05-30 22:09:00 <Guide to building your own PC>

I HAVE to have one of those see-through-with-green-back-lighting PCs!!! *drool* Thanks tweak'e for giving me the link to my dreams!

Who will make one for me? Can you get those cases here?
He makes it look so easy...

But why didn't he say what modem he got? Heck, there aren't any PCs without modems these days, are there?

51636 2002-05-30 22:44:00 I saw yesterday at our local Harvey Normans (Porirua) that they were indeed selling those cases. Let's see:

Aluminium case with window (no m/board or power supply) $350

Neon tubes - $60 each includes mounting kit

Glow wire - $20 (length unknown)

I'd be quite happy to build one for you :-)

Otherwise, check out www.coolcases.co.nz for a local option.

51637 2002-05-30 23:26:00 sure no problem and we will put in one of the multi light fans so it spins different colours, has enough fans to do the vacuum cleaning for you and the worlds best 28k modem to match telecoms lines ;-) Guest (0)
51638 2002-05-31 11:42:00 <www.stylespc.com <www.overclockers.co.nz sell stuff for modding PC's. Styles offers a modding service as well.

I personally are not inclined to mod a case to look better, just need decent cooling and better hardware as opposed to aesthetics.
