| 51639 | 2002-05-30 12:32:00 | While with a friend to- night, we downloaded and tried to install update for her McAfee Virus Scanner. Blue Screen and error message appeared.Ended up having to switch off the PC. Restart gets as far as desktop. Then McAfee appears to try to scan the system, but a blue screen with error messages appear again. Ctrl+Alt+Del tells us that Sys tray is running but not explorer. 4 unknown files are running, 2 starting with VS, probably related to the McAfee scanning at startup. We are unable to return to the windows program. I am unfamiliar with the WinME OS, but wonder whether the right action to take would be: Start in Safe Mode by holding down the Ctrl key when booting up. Uninstall McAfee from the Add/Remove Program. |

Start your WinME system and boot into SAFE mode On the Startup menu, click Run , type MSCONFIG in the Command Line box, and then press ENTER. Click Launch System Restore to begin restoring your computer to a previous, functional state. You can also start the System Restore tool by typing c:\windows\system\restore\rstrui.exe at a command prompt, and then pressing ENTER. For more info about System Restore tool, see Q267951 article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base support.microsoft.com Cheers, Babe. |

It's worth a try, but it might be a reload of Windows. This will require booting from a floppy (or using the BIOS setup and arranging it to boot from the CD first). The reload will 'usually' not lose installed programmes. But try to get it booting (without the McAfee starting), and uninstall McAfee. The see if Windows is working Ok (without going on the Internet), then reinstall the antivirus. |
