51642 2002-05-30 11:12:00 Just reading up on Cable connection thinking that this would be the way to go, but was shocked when you realise exactly how the service works. Although the cable might provide fast service what I didn't realise was that anyone on my 'neighbourhood' cable can potentionally click on an icon and see exactly what I'm doing on the internet and even download files from my computer. Sure I could install a firewall but how many times have you seen posts here saying how one firewall failed where another was successful. Sounds risky to me. Guest (0)
51643 2002-05-30 13:51:00 These are software firewalls. If you think you're at risk invest in a hardware firewall.

Software firewalls provide reasonable protection if running correctly. Firewalls can fail for numerous reasons as well as most software and hardware.

This is a help forum and you'll get people saying their firewall didn't work but there are many more users out there who are probably running the same firewall and it's been working fine for them.

Fast internet connections especially static IPs should be protected with a firewall and is recommended by ISPs.

As for them your 'neighbourhood'. Is this network neighbourhood or you mean people in your area? Either way you're probably running File Sharing over TCP/IP which enables the netbios service which means anyone trying to connect to your computer on port 139 will discover what files you are sharing and if you've enabled full share then you're at a bigger risk.

My advice would be to install a firewall so you will be protected. If it fails you know where to come to for help.

51644 2002-05-31 09:02:00 Hey Cable Guy,

Fret not, i'm on a cable here in CHCH My machine is rather old but upgraded, running 450CPU/256RAM, i am running 98SE, Zonealarm, and a webserver 24/7

As yet, i have had only 2 problems; First it gets a bit slow when also using Photoshop as well. The other problem has been finding my web server has had unathorised access and been used as a proxy. Neither of these would be a problem to a 'normal user'
I suspect that the main reason you see so many queries as to what is wrong with various firewalls is simply that so many people are using them.

BTW, anyone on the internet can look into your computer if you leave the wrong doors open, cable just makes you a fixed target.
