51844 2002-06-01 02:05:00 hi, If i have 2 100mbps network cards and a 10mbps card on the same network though a hub, will the entire network run at the slower speed? Will the 2 100's run to each other at 100 still?

(2x realtek rtl8139 100,bps cards, 1 x realtek rtl8019 10 card) (UTP cables)

will i need a special hub?

thanks in advance everyone,
Karz

51845 2002-06-01 02:59:00 A *switch* rather than a hub should work. A *hub* which can handle 10/100 might work. It would depend on how smart it is. Guest (0)
51846 2002-06-01 03:38:00 P.S. With cards the price they are now, why not buy another 100 Mbps card when you buy the 100 Mbps hub or switch?

Makes sense to me ...

51847 2002-06-01 05:59:00 The two 100Mbps cards will talk to each at 100's theorytically..if the 10Mbps cards wish to talk to the two 100Mbps cards..the 100Mbps cards will drop to 10Mbps...my suggestion is 10/100Mbps cards is cheap nowadays...buy another one...and Switch is better than Hub...as Switch records or logs in its memory which computer is always communicating to which computer.

51848 2002-06-01 09:36:00 With a hub, all the clients are effectively paralleled - they all see each others transmissions - whether destined for them or not. Therefore all devices will fall back to the speed of the lowest device (10mbps). A switch is more complex, and can store packets and re-transmit them at a speed suitable for the recipient. So a client at 100mbps can communicate with a 10mbps device and vice versa. Guest (0)
51849 2002-06-03 08:58:00 Thanks guys,

The only reason I havnt got myself another 100mb card is because it has to fit a an old slow 486, 66mhz which only has ISA slots.

what price am i looking at for a cheap switch.

all i want is for the 100mb cards to transfer at 100mb to each other, and then at 10 to the 10mb card

Thanks for your help and time
