51841 2002-05-31 23:29:00 First, thanks to all here who answer questions on this site. I have learned more from my short time following this site, than from anywhere else over my previous years of computer use.

My question - I have just purchased Office XP Pro (from Advantage, after learning about them from another post on Press F1).

At present I am running Office 97 - it was an upgrade over an earlier version of Office, which in turn was an upgrade to MS Works. Consequently there is quite a mish mash of bits of all three progs on the PC.

My question is, should I get rid of all of that mess first, and then install Office XP Pro from scratch (it is a full version, not an upgrade)?

If I do that, does anyone know where MS Word stores the Autotext file, and what it is called? I have heaps of addresses in there that I would like to preserve if possible and transfer to Office XP Pro.

Ditto the Custom Dictionary I guess, but that is less important. At least I know where that resides in Win98SE and I guess I might be able to find it in my present Windows XP Pro set up as well... I have the Te Reo Maori dictionary on disk, so I can reinstall that one, and that is more important because I am not a Maori speaker.

Thanks for any help.

51842 2002-06-01 00:15:00 Hi John,

The Office Save My Settings Wizard allows you to save your Office settings and then restore and use them on your own or another computer.

The settings that are saved include the following; Toolbar modifications, Menu modifications, Settings in the Options dialog box (Tools menu), Default location for templates, files, and clip art, Default format for saving files, AutoCorrect lists, Custom dictionaries , Office shortcut bar customization, and Templates

To save or restore your Office XP specific settings:

1.Quit any Office programs that are running.

2.On the Start menu, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Office Tools, and then click Save My Settings Wizard.

3.Follow the instructions on the screen to use the wizard.

51843 2002-06-01 00:34:00 Your AutoText entries are stored in the normal.dot template file. Copy the old template to floppy or whatever, rename it, open the copy of the old template in the new version of Word, and then use the Organizer to copy AutoText, styles, etc across the normal.dot of the new version of Word.
