51825 2002-05-31 21:42:00 I'm selling my machine with windows 98 and would like to replace the 'log off George' in the start menu with the new owner's name. Any Ideas?
Thanks

start > settings > control panel > network

You should atleast reformat, otherwise the buyer will get lots of surprises when they stummble on what you left behind! And you are being a tad naughty selling a comp with a microsoft O/S on it!
What would Billy Boy say??

There is nothing wrong with selling a second hand computer with Windows installed. It is clearly stated in Microsofts EULA that the software can be sold to another person on the condition that it is removed from all other computers, no copies are retained and that the original CD is provided.

51828 2002-06-01 06:37:00 Hi George, the name George in the 'log off' measage in start menu is the username you entered when you first logged on to windows. I assume you then left the password field blank and now you get no opportunity to change the user name. To create that opportunity, use find files and folders to locate a file called George.pwl and delete it. Reload your system and it will invite you to enter a username and password. Type in the new owners name and leave the password blank and voila, it's done.

HTH PC

PS before you delete George.pwl make sure you know what your dialup password is because if you have asked windows to save it and then forgotten it like many people do, this is the file that windows remembers it in and the next time you want to connect it won't be able to fill it in for you.
