52070 2002-06-02 07:58:00 Hi all - Has anybody got any ideas on unsubscribing from e-mail newsletters (SPAM).
I remembered reading in imag sometime back that by unsubscribing you are actually verifying your e-mail and opening yourself up for more spam, is this correct?
My scenario is that in the last 6 months i have managed to keep one e-mail address spam free - by just being very selective in who i give it to, and using my hotmail acc. for signing up or into things etc... This suits me to the ground!!!
However i was just sent one of those e-mail funpages (to my spam free acc.)and was suckered into opening it as well as automatically receiving their offers etc... by clicking the open it link. Within a day i have received their newsletter!
My question is if i use the unsubscribe link will this open me up to even more spam or will i get that anyway now cause these guys will share the e-mail addresses?
Any ideas gratefully accepted!!!

52071 2002-06-02 09:05:00 J,

I've found that probably 90% of the time the unsubscribe works, if it goes through a website (eg the click takes you to a website and you click on an unsubscribe button), but generally a reply email to a hotmail or such address does NOT work. You can usually tell by the target of the link - if its some strange obscure sounding address or URL, it's probably not genuine, but if it takes you back to the website you've subscribed to, it'll probably work (but of course, no guarantees).

52072 2002-06-02 09:47:00 With hotmail you can use their feature that filters the emails you receive...You can choose about 10 different words (I think) and state that if any of them appear in an email subject line the email will go to the folder you nominate (i.e. I send then to 'junk mail' if I may want to check them, or 'trash' if I know I won't). As my email addy is not my full name, but findcarol@ i set the filter to weed out any that have the word findcarol in the subject line, i.e. 'Findcarol, this offer is for you'....

I have also filtered words like mortgage, free, penis, offer, debt, sex, etc
This has cut down spam dramatically.

(Yes, folks, I know I could alternately block all but those on my address list, but prefer not to as i use this email as my 'give it out and keep main email spam-free' one *S*)
So, you could unsubscribe and see what happens, using the name of the newsletter as a filter word choice if you find you still get stuff from them (and hope like hell they do not sell their contact list to anyone else).

52073 2002-06-02 11:30:00 Thanks Mike & Carol - yes it does seem to take me to their website and then has a place to fill in my e-mail add. and press submit (i didn't like the look of the fill in my e-mail addy) so i guess its worth a try then with Mikes % working. Thanks again, and yes i do use the blocks etc.. however I have done amazingly well in not receiving spam even in my hotmail and haven't needed those settings - whereas my partners and most people i knows hotmail is constantly full of spam - haven't yet worked out what i am doing or may just be my hotmail addy is not common, -
anyway the thought of having that crap coming through to my/our xtra acc. does not turn me on in the least so hope this will put a stop to it before it all starts!!! Heres hoping !!! Thanks again!! The main worry is the site selling their list i have read!

52074 2002-06-02 19:33:00 Or you could try the following and set up rules to Delete from Server unwanted messages.

If you are using Outlook Express you can set up rules, one of them is Delete from Server.
Highlight the offending message, Click on Message - Create Rule From Message - that will open a box with three windows, the first window is ticked by default Where The Sender Is - go to the second window and tick Delete from Server - now the fun begins, in the third window is the senders address. If the address is yahoo, xtra, mailcity, or any other common web based mail, then just Ok the rule. If the address ends in something such as grouplotto.com or adultmail.com, then you can create a additional rule to further block mail from that site even if they change the first part of the address from freecar to freemoney. Place your mouse over the address, single left click the address, that will bring up a extra window, in the ADD line type in the address from and including the @, so for example type in @grouplotto.com and that will block other messages from that site as well. If you were to apply this to addresses for sites ending in yahoo for example, then you would also block all good senders from yahoo as well.

52076 2002-06-03 01:57:00 Thanks also to Gordon, Al & Richard. I am hoping i will nip it in the bud by unsubscribing (wishful thinking), however i am now prepared with all the imfo i need if that doesn't work - thanks to your feedback. Gordon thanks for the instructions, that will probably be my first action if i start getting it - sounds like a good first measure as it is in O.Express & i haven't needed to use those settings yet and didn't realise they went that far, so your instructions are most helpful!! Thanks again

52077 2002-06-03 05:39:00 In addition to the ADD line when you click the senders address in the third window

Some junk mail now has addresses like the following

freecar@bm678.uwin.com

Now, you have already got the rule based on that address, using the ADD line as detailed in my last post, you can put in @bm678.uwin.com but whats the bet tomorrow it will be freecar@bg455.....so before you OK the rule you use that ADD line yet again and put in just uwin.com as the address therefore covering multiple bases in one hit.

52078 2002-06-07 05:31:00 Go to http://www.mailwasher.net/ and download MailWasher. Very very good program and FREE. You can set it to bounce back unwanted spam so that your address looks like it doesn't exist to the sender and they will soon remove you from their list. Guest (0)
