52007 2002-06-02 01:11:00 Hi All

I have just installed Mandrake Linux 8.2 on a PC at University, but I am having a few probs with it.

Although, during setup I told it what my hardware was(video card, monitor, network card etc) it doesn't seem to like them.

I can't get it to pickup my network card even using standard NE2000 Compatible drivers (the card works in Win 3.1x, 95, 98 etc) and I can only run my graphics card at 640x480x16 Colours which make configuring it kind of difficult.

The Specs of the machine are:
FIC Socket 370 Motherboard (VA-11 ???)
64MB PC-133 RAM (running at 66MHz)
20GB Seagate U5 Series Hard-Drive
S3 Trio64V+ Graphics Card (PCI)
ViewSonic 15' E655 Monitor
Repotec NE2000 Compatible Network Card.

Regards

Michael

52008 2002-06-02 01:39:00 Hi Michael,

I don't really have an answer for you other than to try and find new drivers on the 'net.

Did you diable P'n'P OS in the BIOS? You need to do this to install Linux. Refer to Chapter 3.1 'Configuring your BIOS' of the Installation and User Guide.

I also have ML8.2 on this PC (but I have seperate removable HDs - one for Windoze , one for Linux), and I from memory I just let it do it's own thing. It picked up everything without a hitch.

52009 2002-06-02 07:31:00 We really need to know more about the nature of the problem than 'it doesn't like them'.

What exactly happens during the bootup process? Are there any error messages? Is the result the same if you enter 'linux 3' at the LILO prompt?

52010 2002-06-02 09:35:00 Good one - so how do you 'trigger' your pc to boot into Linux once you've got the Linux HD in the removeable bay ?
Or are 'both' OSs on removeable HD .... ?

52011 2002-06-04 04:01:00 While NE2000 compatible cards work well with Windows, they are not always so good with Linux. Any which have *not* got the red NetWare 'approved' sticker are not always good with anything.

Check the Ethernet HOWTO : it's got 2 sections devoted to NE1000/2000 cards. Often you have to add an append='ether= ... ' statement in the lilo.conf so that the card can be setup and accessed. The NE cards *often* give problems when they are autoprobed. I stick to 3com or SMC/WD cards since I have the choice from my boxes of Ethernet cards.

The other hardware recognition problems might go away if you tell the BIOS PandP to go away. (I found that RH7.1 behaved much better after I shot the Linux 'kudzu' equivalent, too.)

Again, check the HOWTO files for every type of hardware you have problems with. That's what the HOWTOs are for.
