51932 2002-06-01 08:42:00 Can anyone advise if Windows XP Home comes with Scandisk and Defrag. My g/f has XP Home on her laptop, and I am unfamiliar with XP in any form. She wants to reformat it, and reload everything because she can't find MSN messenger. I figured running scan disk and defrag may help sort out any possibility of lost clusters etc.

Any Ideas. Thanks.

51935 2002-06-01 09:21:00 I have xp home. Yes it has defrg and scandisk. I don't think that by running them will find messanger again. Why not just download it from microsoft? Try searching the Hard drive for it. Mine was under C:/Program files/messenger Guest (0)
51936 2002-06-01 10:47:00 She can see if messenger is in fact installed.

First test.

Goto Sart>Run...

Type msmsg.exe and press enter.

Messenger should run if it is installed.

If it does not, you can perform another test.

Open any folder

Click on the tools menu, click on the view tab, and enable 'show hidden files and folders'

Goto C:\Windows\inf

Click on sysoc.inf to open it in notepad.

Click on the edit menu and select Replace...

or press CTRL+H

type hide in the find box, and leave the replace box blank.

Click 'replace all'

Close sysoc.inf.

When notepad asks you if you want to save changes, click yes.

The reason why you have to do this is so that windows displays messenger in the add/remove option of the control panel. It is hidden by default.

Now goto Start>control panel

click on add/remove programs.

Select add/remove windows components.

Near the bottom of the list is the entry for windows messenger. Make sure the box beside it is ticked. Then OK your way out of the menu.

If the box was unticked, messenger is now installed, and should load at startup. If it was already ticked, it is already installed,a nd should work with the above run command.

Any probs, don't hesitate to reply to this post.
