52212 2002-06-03 06:43:00 Do I HAVE to buy a program like Partition Magic just to partition my hd? Am not keen on spending $120 for something I will use only once :) Guest (0)
52213 2002-06-03 08:39:00 No you don't just use 'fdisk' that comes with the OS.
It would have helped if you had mentioned what OS you plan to use and what sized HD.
I recommend 4 partitions OS/ Programs/ Data & Swap. I have found my system very stable since I partitioned this way.

52214 2002-06-03 09:17:00 I want to install WinME in volume C then WinXp in another. I tried FDISK but the warning message frightened the life out of me! Guest (0)
52215 2002-06-03 09:19:00 hd is 20gig Guest (0)
52216 2002-06-03 10:48:00 it sure helps ;-)

partition magic or simaler programs is the easyest way to do it if you have data on the drive.

don't use fdisk unless you what to reinstall everything.

ranish (free program) can do it thou not as simple as partition magic.

52217 2002-06-03 11:51:00 You don't say if you want to start from scratch or keep the existing files on the computer.

If you start from scratch use fdisk. If you want to keep your files DON'T! You'll need a utility such as partition magic (and back up your data before using to be on the safe side!)

Essentially fdisk allows you to make 2 partitions - a primary one and an extended one. If you want extra partitions you create them within the extended partition.

52218 2002-06-03 12:52:00 Don't use fdisk. surf the web and get a demo version of partition magic. Guest (0)
52219 2002-06-03 14:04:00 It's a 'start from scratch' situation. Will try to find a demo version of Partition Magic. If unsuccessful I will press ahead with FDISK. After all what really serious damage can I do to my hd?? :) Guest (0)
52220 2002-06-04 00:23:00 the demo ver of partition magic dosn't actually do anything unless you *cough* buy it. Guest (0)
