52267 2002-06-03 11:23:00 Every time I boot my PC some process is accessing the floppy drive (in vain) which slows down the boot-up process and is painful to the ear. I'm running Windows 98 and have run diagnostic backup (couldn't id any of the initial processes as the culprit and windows ran on and the problem occured again). Then I booted up without the start-up files (problem still occured). Which processes is Windows starting in between that could be causing the problem, how do I find the culprit and fix it? Its driving me nuts... Guest (0)
52268 2002-06-03 11:34:00 If you go into the bios and change the boot option to boot from the hard drive as a higher priority to the removable drive, it will boot faster without trying to access the floppy.

Assume from your post that its happening before it gets into windows??

52269 2002-06-03 12:23:00 in the bios is an optoin along the lines of 'check floppy drive', turn it off.

if the niose really gets to you get a new floppy drive, i prefer sony as they are nice and quiet and don't give trouble unlike some others i've had.

52270 2002-06-03 22:05:00 Thanks. I've already done that but it doesn't look for the floppy drive til after Windows starts... Guest (0)
52271 2002-06-03 22:10:00 Um - I have a Compaq machine and the bios is so basic there doesn't appear to be an option to check the floppy drive.

Not sure I get enough use out of the floppy drive anymore to warrant spending money on an alternative - maybe I'll just yank the darn thing out if I can't locate and fix the problem at the source.
