52414 2002-06-04 08:46:00 if i do a format /mbr on a drive does this delete the partitions and the data on them? Guest (0)
52415 2002-06-04 08:52:00 It is not format /mbr

the correct command is fdisk /mbr

It will NOT delete any data or partition info. It will only put the standard MS boot record. Useful in case you want to get rid of Linux Boot Loader (LILO)

52416 2002-06-05 03:25:00 FDISK /MBR and FDISK /STATUS are the only 'safe' fdisk options. Any deletions of partitions are destructive. Totally destructive. There is NO easy way to recover. Some expensive services can recover data. Sometimes.

But /MBR will often make a disk bootable again after a variety of disasters which can happen to/with MS software. (Installing Linux *should not* be a disaster).
