52372 2002-06-04 06:27:00 Looking for advice on how to backup my business files to a CD-RW. Currently using Iomega & a Zip drive 100 but reaching maximum capacity. Currently daily backup 320mb.
Have a AOpen 32x12x48. Iomega makes backing up & restore easy but not compatable with cd-r. Running windows 2000.

thanks

52373 2002-06-04 07:49:00 I use a CDRW. It is rather slow at 2x/4x. Luckily this is a home PC. I could either use the backup software that came with the drive - this supports both CD-R and CD-RW. However I use zip and direct CD. Even after up to 80% compression (20% original file size) I am just about fulling the CD-RW. Also CD-R's and CD-RW's cannot be repaired if they get bad sectors/lost file fragments. I had heaps of these particularly under Windows 98.

For serious backup consider a tape drive which is supported properly under NT (2000/XP). I have been advised by the distributor that the Orb drive used for another backup process is not recomended since only administrators can eject these disks. Also the drive letter resets after rebooting.

Hope this is of value.

52374 2002-06-04 12:18:00 Hi Guys

For even more serious backup, install a second (or third)HD. This should preferably in a removable cassette so that you can unplug it to take it off site. It is the cheapest and fastest backup you can get. You can do daily or weekly backups, incremental backups or any flavour you like.

I keep backups (via Ghost) of both Data and OS/Program files both on the existing fixed hard drives (C: to D: and D: to C:) and copies of both on a third (removable drive). If my computer melted down or was stolen I could be up and running again in the time taken to buy a suitable replacement and restore my OS/Programs and my data. That's probably less than three hours.

Cheers
