52609 2002-06-05 08:38:00 I have 4 computers networked through a hub 100/10. When I try to ping each computer I sometimes get a response but mainly 'time out'. The computers are a 2x P166 P350 amd2000xp. Between the 350 amd2000 the results are
32time<10ms TTL 64
min 0ms max 0ms avg 0ms. Sometimes the figure can be120TTL.

These results are foreign to me but I do know that the 'throughput on the network is very slow and variable for 'flight simulator programs I need.

Can anybody explain these findings, and suggest a way to improve speeds

Thanx

52610 2002-06-05 09:15:00 Have you got a firewall - eg zonealarm running - this will stop pings unless properly configured.
Are they all on the same subnet - eg 192.168.0.1,192.168.0.2,192.168.0.3 with subnet mask 255.255.255.0? Is their default gateway the same eg 192.168.0.1?

52611 2002-06-06 00:53:00 Thanks Marty for your reply.
Yes zonealarm is running and I will look into the necessary configuration.

Yes they are all on the same sunet 192.168.10.1 to 4 and correct mask.

How ever I would appreciate it if your could explain 'default gateway'
Thanx

52612 2002-06-06 04:45:00 The Ping results are: '32' is the size of the packet returned from the other host,
'<10 ms' means that it took less than 10 ms, the max, min, avg values are '0' because the packets went so quickly, that is, less than 1 ms.

The TTL (Time To Live) is a number set by the originator, and it is reduced by 1 each time the ping packet goes through a router. (That number used to be about 16 --- that was considered to be 'infinite'). It is there to stop infinite loops ... the Flying (Dutch) packet lost in cyberspace, condemned to roam forever ...

If you get Time Exceeded error, that means that the TTL was reduced to 0. How do your local pings get out to the Internet? It should not happen.

The TCP/IP protocol should be enabled for only one device -- the Ethernet adaptor in this case. If it is enabled for a modem (Dial up adaptor) as well, that could cause problems. I don't *think* you should have NETBEUI or IPX installed either ...

Are you pinging with IP numeric addresses or by name?

52613 2002-06-06 05:30:00 Firstly Marty --- closing ZoneAlarm fixed the problem of 'timing out'
Graham Thank you for your reply. I am pinging with numeric addresses.

If my main computer (P350) is pinged from the AMD2000 the reading is time<10ms TTL=64

Pinging the opposite way the reading is time<10ms TTL128.

I am afraid that when I get into protocols etc I am 'over my head' so may find it necessary to get a expert in!!
