| 52556 | 2002-06-05 05:43:00 | I have been thinking on getting linux. but im not sure which version. I want something fairly easy to use, since im used to windows, but if the other one is better, but harder to use, ill take that, because i dont mind learning. can someone help me with this? Mandrake or Red Hat |

That gives me what I want that machine to do. The first one (386 SX20) I installed Linux on has 6 MB ram and a 40MB disk. That has the same Slackware distribution on it --- loaded from floppies. Still works. Doesn't crash. But all distributions are OK. They're all Linux. (I might except Debian ... it's for real enthusiasts). Lilo is the multi boot programme which has been around for a long time. All the known bugs have been fixed. Grub is newer. Not all the bugs are known. It apparently does not have the '-u' uninstall option to restore the original MBR. That can be a problem. The 'Getting Started' guide is well worth reading. So are the HOWTO files. Look for the local mirrors of the LDP (Linux Documentation Project), and browse. Libraries have books. Some have books about Linux. The ones focussded on Red Had are all good, but they are really about Linux, not distributions. |

Anyway im totally new to this stuff, so ill probably be back here when i get it. Hopefully in 2 months, when my dad has cleared all his work and bussines off the old computer so i can put my own stuff on. Thanks again |
