52508 2002-06-05 01:34:00 You are so right! FDISK is so scary for a non-tech like me. Likewise RANISH. Even Microsoft's support page caters only for people who have a degree in computer science. All I want to do is partition my 20gig hd to run WinMe and WinXP. I am looking for instructions which start:-

i) Switch on your computer

but I guess I'm out of luck :)

52509 2002-06-05 02:17:00 Why do you want to install both operating systems?

Technical knowledge is neccessry to install and utilise the features within XP - to be able to partition and also know how and why is merely an extension of that knowledge.

To ask for assistance and then baulk at the act of implementing that assistance implies that the desire to gain the necessary knowledge (and confidence) is is not a high priority.

52511 2002-06-05 03:05:00 Sheesh Merlin; you're a bit up yourself aren't you? All the guy is asking for is a bit of help. I thought that's what this site was for. Guest (0)
52512 2002-06-05 03:13:00 Walking you through FDisk would be a time consuming task... I wasn't even halfway through explaining it when I realised that I'd typed well over half a page!

It'd just be easier if you went to:

www.ontrack.com

and have a look there. I found it easy to understand, but then I've used FDisk before.

Try that page, and if it makes sense, print the instructions out and keep them handy while you work.

However, if you think it's too difficult to undersatnd, don't troll on regardless. Get some help from someone who knows what they're doing.

Good luck!

52513 2002-06-05 03:48:00 Oh, by the way...

You are going to want to answer 'Y' to enable Large disk support, since the example on that page seems to indicate otherwise.

With the help of that guide, create two partitions:

One for WinME (Primary, C:) and One for WinXP (Extended, D:). Make C: about 3GB (3000MB), and the rest can go to the D: Drive. Assuming this is what you want...

The first Partition (or Primary) you create will be C:
You MUST install WinME on this drive FIRST, before you even consider setting up WinXP on the D: drive.

So therefore, WinME will be on the C: drive, and WinXP in the D: drive. Just make sure WinME comes first, ok!

Later on you can Make Windows XP your default OS, but for now you have to put up with ME, since XP will only install from Windows9x or 2000.

When you do eventually get around to installing XP, make sure you leave the D: drive as FAT32. This will save confusion when WinME tries to read stuff from that drive.

If you need more help... just Email me and if I have time I'll see what I can do.

Blarg... time for coffee!

52514 2002-06-05 06:45:00 A bit in Merlin's way. Do you really need ME?
XP is easy to install and partition doing a clean install and is very stable. Back up all the stuff you need and just have XP by itself. You won't regret it. Saves some disc space too.
I use a program called INACHIS to back up OE and IE and it's magic how all my mail, newsgroups and favourites returned, intact.

52515 2002-06-05 10:21:00 Also, don't ever think about removing ME once it is on.

The boot configuration files are on C: with ME.

You cannot simply remove C:, make D: the active partition and recreate the boot.ini and netldr files.

I tried - about six times - and ended up with reformat, reinstall XP on C: (that was last nite) The six times involved several methods including the microsoft KB articles. (I was able to continually try due to my foresight of a couple of ghost images).

All info online tells you haow to remove ME - that is the easy part, but theyalso all say you cannot remove C:\.

The only option I did not try was copying all the XP files to C: and then using something like drive mapper to change all the registry entries. Maybe I should have tried that, but I didn't think of it at the time.

Suffice to say - if possible, it is not any easy task, and definitely not something a newbie should try. My opinion - unless absolutely necessary - don't install ME.
