52498 2002-06-05 00:16:00 Hi, when I'm surfing the net my computer freezes up on me and I don't know why? I have to close down everything and reconnect. I'm using internet explorer, can anyone help? Guest (0)
52499 2002-06-05 04:26:00 Much more information needed, Lee.

How fast is your computer, how much memory, how fast your modem ... what OS?

Is the computer 'freezing', or is it displaying the eggtimer, and puttig the disk activity light on, while it flogs away at the disk trying to make room in memory?

52500 2002-06-05 07:33:00 Yeah I have the same problem too - I'm running ME which is plain crash prone, hoping an upgrade to XP will fix it, but this is Microsoft so not holding my breath. Also have 256Mb RAM, so that shouldn't be a problem.

As I understand it, the problem is that everytime you run the computer, all the applications and files you open are still there using space after you close them - web pages are .htm files often with lots of data, so either the page or lots of its contents (pictures, cookies etc) are accumulated. Applications are the same - which is why you get system resources warnings after a long session even when hardly anything is actually open. I'm not sure exactly where they accumulate, but the effect is that your RAM is gradually filled up with stuff no longer in use, eventually = blue screen of death.

We both need someone to explain exactly what happens and how to fix it. There are settings within Windows and third-party applications which are supposed to 'manage' memory and clean it out before it gets too full. I've used one called Rambooster but not entirely successfully.

The fallback position is to open the Resource Meter (in System Tools)or the memory application throughout the session, and when it gives a warning about low resources (under 10% in Resource Meter) close everything down in an orderly fashion and reboot.

52501 2002-06-05 11:30:00 try this fix...right clik my computer...then properties...device managers open...clik performance tab...clik graphics...then in advanced graphics settings you will the Hardware Acceleration bar...play around with that...its got explanations when u position the pointer in different settings...try different settings...see if it fixes ur problem....i hope that helps.

i know its got nothing to do with ur graphics, but try that..see what happens.

52502 2002-06-07 22:44:00 ...or maybe it's simply getting bogged down. This used to happen to me till i learnt to keep clearing out temp internet files, history nad cookies (when disconnected) and as you surf you'll see little icons of the sites you've visited piling up on the left side of taskbar. Don't let them pile up, all take space and processing time. Keep just the few relevant ones open. Hope this helps. (late newbie) Guest (0)
52503 2002-06-13 00:39:00 sorry its taken me so long to answer, I'm not that computer minded but here goes,

AMD Athlon processor 1800+, 512Mb PC2100 DDR Ram, 40.0Gb 5400rpm ATA 100 Hard drive, 56k modem. Operating system is Windows XP.

When it freezes, I get the egg timer and nothing else. I also get the message that the system is 'no longer responding'.

Also I clean out my disk, files, temporary files once a week and I have 85% free disk space.

Does this help?
