52809 2002-06-06 08:40:00 The system I have is just over 2 years old: 400 Mhz Celeron PII chip, 128 Mb RAM, Win 98 (with the updates). Works OK and no real problems but over the next year or so I will have to face upgrading, and my question here focuses on the graphics card: it is an 8 Mb ATI 2X AGP - not sure what the letters and numbers mean but with new graphics cards at around 64 Mb I can see that the one I have is 'old'. What would the advantages, if any, of my upgrading to a better graphics card?

Note: I am not a 'gamer' and do not edit videos, but do have a digital camera and use Adobe Photoshop 6, and of course surf the Net (but nothing fancy or big time downloading). Do I forget about upgrading the old graphics card, even if I replace the chip and motherboard (to at least a 1.2 GHz)? Sometimes while scanning photos or manipulating images the system is slow (used to freeze on occasion when only running 64 Mb RAM, but not now). By the way, I have researched the Press F1 Archives, but could not find much that was relevant to my question. Thanks for your comments and suggestions. Cheers - Steve

I wouldn't even bother upgrading the motherboard and CPU unless you use complex Photoshop effects that are taking a long time to complete. Scanning time won't improve much either. I would suggest a large HDD, more RAM, and a good monitor as more important priorities. Guest (0)
52811 2002-06-07 00:26:00 it agree with that. even though u have photoshop running a new video card is not essential unless u do complex graphics. my laptop is a year old (ultra portable) has only got 4MB, the newer models like $6000+ has only got 8MB. DVD should be sweet as well.

Games/intensive graphic work go for it. Get a new one.
