52761 2002-06-06 01:34:00 Hi guys,

I am stuck trying to network a new pc running XP Home, with my Win98SE computer.

I have installed a Realtek card on the XP machine, the card is present and working properly according to Device manager.

Under Network Properties, TCP/IP, Microsoft Client for Networks, File/Print Sharing are all there.

We used the Network Setup Wizard to organise the setup on the XP computer, and followed the instructions which seemed straight forward. ie. naming the computer, specifying a workgroup etc.

The last step, was to either use the Windows XP CD or a network setup floppy disk on the other computer in the network, my Win98SE computer. Having updated the drivers for the Win98 network card this also was successful.

My network card on the Win98SE computer is a Realtek RTL8029 AS, which I note is not on the list of XP approved cards. We have used this computer successfully (with this network card) on a network with another win98 computer in the past. It has all the Win98 protocols etc on it.

We checked the crossover cable to make sure it is ok, and it is ok. We have tried finding ech others computer (no joy)

Both computers are assigned to the same workgroup.

We have also set both cards to Half Duplex 10Mb.

The XP computer can ping itself and the Win98 computer. When we try to look at computers in the workgroup, we cant, the error message says we may not have permission.

The Win 98 can ping itself but not the XP computer. In Network Neighbourhood, it can see the other computer, but cant access it. What is really wierd is that just as the the XP PC boots up or shutsdown, Win 98 can ping and get a response. As soon as XP finishes booting up, the requests time out.

What do you think is the solution -> no i need to purchase an XP friendly card for my Win 98 PC? Or is there another solution.

Are there additional security settings on XP home we should know about? It seems we are frustratingly close.

I'm not sure if this will help, it might even be something you've tried already.

You mention how it says to use a network setup floppy on the other computers and then say you updated the drivers (but don't say if you actually made the network setup disk).

I had a very similar problem connecting a Win 98 machine to a Win 95 machine (in this case the 95 machine could see and do everything with the 98 machine, but not vice versa).

The problem resolved itself eventually when I managed to install XP on the 98 machine and then transfer network settings to the 95 machine.

Anyway, about that network connections disk.

Go:
Start > All Programs > Accessories > Communications > Network Setup Wizard

Follow the steps in the wizard and one of the last ones will ask you to insert a floppy disk and it will create an exe file on the disk. Put the disk in the 98 machine and run the exe file. It will then run the wizard on the 98 machine. Check that the settings are the same (mostly just workgroup) and that should solve the problem.

As a note though you might want to right click on 'Network Places' and view properties to check the IP Address...personally I get it to automatically assign an IP address, but you can always input one if you want to I guess...not sure how this will affect it though...just a thought.

52764 2002-06-06 02:44:00 Thanks Callum,

yes we had tried used the Network Setup Wizard on the Win 98 pc as well.

The IP addresses are both manually put in, and both are reading the same (apart from the last number).

52765 2002-06-06 03:45:00 Nick - check that you have got something shared on the XP machine.

Also if you go to this site
(www.wown.com) there is plenty of good info on networking PC's

52766 2002-06-06 04:10:00 Thanks for the response Ian.

I thought I had plenty of info in my initial post... obviously not enough :)

I'll have a good look at the site you listed.

On the XP computer, the entire C drive is shared.
