2002-06-05 23:11:00 | Hi Graham, You have confirmed my fears to some extent. Being in central CHCH i have the telstra option, and my mobile is vodaphone (of course) When/if i manage to sell and move, or if i manage to be more nomadic, i will need dial up, and hopefully one of the options mentioned in this thread will sufficiantly serve my needs, maybe... Still it is good to hear there are satisfied jetscream customers!

2002-06-05 23:23:00 | Am quite content with Paradise dial up. Have been using it for a number of years and had on the odd occasion an engaged signal. $20 for 250 hours, have not even hit the 200 hour mark hence the non change. Must admit the help desk is nigh on impossible to get hold of so try to solve problems myself. With 2 computers in our house we both generally get a minimum of 52 000bps on a phone line 30 years old and 54 600 on a new phone line so from Telecoms point of view no probs either.

Don't forget Telecom is a business and the cost of upgrading rural areas has got to be marginal (at best) on a business case basis. Especially as when they do people like you would still use TelstraClear (but using the lines that Telecom put in!) Also (and even more amusing) is that you tout TelstraClear as though they are a white knight charging to the rescue. Just look over the ditch where they are the incumbent - their antics are much worse than Telecom's over here. Telstra (and for that matter Vodofone) are not the little upstarts vying against the big monster Telecom. In fact if you look at resource available to spend etc, it is definitely the other way around... |

2002-06-05 23:49:00 | Yes, we've been with E3 for a year now and are very happy with the service. Can't say the helpdesk is exemplary but wouldn't want to do helpdesk myself either. Otherwise hunky-dory, responsive, consistent and keep you informed. | Guest (0) | |

2002-06-05 23:57:00 | get a grip gb there is always a tradeoff in everything we do. If you're not happy living in rural NZ, enjoying the laidback lifestyle, the nonexistent traffic problems, the friendly neighborhood, the uncramped living style, the quiet rural environment etc, etc then move to the city. The touble with you is that you want your cake and eat it too. If you think that the competition are willing to spend a million dollars to instal brand new lines just so you and you can enjoy faster internet then by all means ask them, post us the result. | Guest (0) | |
2002-06-06 02:13:00 | I'm pleased to see a few people sticking up for Xtra. I am on dial up with Xtra and have been since I connected to the internet (well in NZ anyway). To be honest, I am absolutely perfectly totally 100% STOKED with their service. It really is excellent. The helpdesk is fantastically helpful and often go WAY beyond what they're actually required to do. I particularly remember one instance in which I'd logged a problem and got a call back on a Sunday and spent about an hour and a half on the phone with the guy trying various modem scripts and he even waited while I moved my computer around the room so that I could plug directly into the phone socket (rather than use a LONG extension cable). I've sent them many letters of congratulations and thanks for their good service and unfortunately that sort of thing never becomes public and we only hear the negative side. So...allow me to add another public voice - WELL DONE Xtra...

2002-06-06 04:03:00 | I'm not unhappy with Paradise, havent had all the problems that some have, agree the helpdesk is absolutely nowhere near what it used to be when a real person answered straight away. Bring back Shane Cole. Now, on another tack, for the benefit of Johnnie g!!! There is a whole generation now who dont know what society was like before 'New Right' philosophies took hold. In those far off days we had something called 'social responsibility' ie. mutual support, more of a caring society, etc. It was accepted that if everyone chipped in then facilities could be provided to rural areas, which otherwise could not be paid for by individuals, or tiny collections of individuals. Now with the philosophy of individuals having to pay out of their own pockets the rural areas are turning into Dickensian slums. No banks, no PO, no hospitals, no doctors, village stores closed, local schools closed, worsening phone and power lines, etc etc. There, Ive had my say and got that off my chest.
