52800 2002-06-06 22:00:00 I have got a Celeron 733mhz, Windows ME - with 192MB of RAM.
Would my computer speed up when I am surfing the net, and downloading music at the same time if I added more RAM, or is it a processer thing?
If its as easy as fitting more RAM, how much more should I fit?
Regards, ALAN :-)

52801 2002-06-06 22:12:00 you should have plenty already. to surf and download is dictated by the speed of your net connection. thus consider to get something like a adsl connection.

ram would help if you were doing intensive stuff like scientic/financial research, adobe photoshop, adobe premiere, CAD, video and music editing ...

52802 2002-06-06 22:57:00 Using the net and downloading music would not be improved by increasing the ram, that is dicated by your connection to the net, the phone line, etc. You could consider dsl if available in your area if you want to improve your on line speed.

Increasing the ram would be useful if you were doing a lot of work in imaging and video for example or some of the later games that seem to like that extra ram.

52803 2002-06-07 01:26:00 Gordon is correct.

The speed of surfing and downloading will not be affected by too little RAM unless you are performing some serious work at the same time. The reason your net connection is slow is because (assuming you have a dial-up modem) you are limited to a theoretical maximum download speed of 56Kbits per second. This is 56000 bits per second.

There are 8 bits in a byte, so that equals 7000 bytes per second. There are 1024 bytes (2^10) in a kilobyte = 6.8KB/s = 0.0067MB/s. So, even if you are acheiving the theoretical maximum speed (very unlikey - 3.5KB - 5KB is more realistic than 6.8KB), a 1MB file will take 149.8sec = approx 2min 30sec.

A more realistic time is 3min 45sec.

So, no matter how much RAM you have, you are still limited by the speed of your modem. In order to increase you speed, you need to do one or both of two things.

1) Increase the speed of your modem.

2) In crease the size of the 'pipe' going into your modem.

Several ISP's offer several different packages that do one or both of these (obviously improving the wire into your house will have no effect if you still have a slow modem). Obviously, with extra speed comes extra cost, but the increased performance has the potential to get that MB that took 3min 45sec into your PC in 4sec (using the fastest internet in NZ at it's max speed).

Hope this explains things.

52804 2002-06-09 12:23:00 thats funny because thats not the fasted you can go on a dialup. Telecom or whoever dont let you go faster than that.
