1303339 2012-09-25 10:17:00 My friend has got a broken Macbook and he has removed the HDD from the broken machine as he's got lots of photos in it. He thinks that the HDD should still be in good working condition.

Question: Can he connect that HDD to his new PC (arriving in the next couple of days) with Windows 7 OS and retrieve those photos? Or it has to be connected to another Mac machine?

1303340 2012-09-25 10:25:00 I think you'll need 3rd party software to read a mac hdd. Since windows cant read hfs. You could try this (www.catacombae.org)

But you cant write to the mac hdd. Only read. You would have to install something like Macdrive (www.mediafour.com), to read and write to the mac hdd. But its not free

Is it possible to copy those photos and put them in Windows' HDD?

1303343 2012-09-25 11:14:00 Try it you'll soon find out, it may work, just as long as you dont write to the mac hdd, with the first link I posted. Unless you want to buy macdrive, then it should read and write Speedy Gonzales (78)
1303344 2012-09-25 12:11:00 Just downloaded HFS Explorer but doesn't seem to be compatible with Win7 x64 system. Unfortunately, MacDrive is not free.

How about Linux? Can linux read the Mac files and copy them?

Anyway, even if I managed to copy out the photos from macbook drive, can Windows open those photos?

Something here may help.

1303346 2012-09-25 13:10:00 Linux probably won't be able to read the drive because the format (Mac OS extended?) is Apple specific. icow (15313)
1303347 2012-09-25 20:59:00 Linux will read HFS IIRC but it's flaky or it may be the write that's flaky, get a linux live cd, hook the HD up to the new box, run the live cd and see if it will mount the drive. If it doesn't recognise the file system it'll simply refuse to mount it.

1303348 2012-09-25 22:26:00 There are apps out there but as you said they are not free, I use HFS for Windows from Paragon, I have no issues with it.
Hmm where in Auckland are you?
