1278938	2012-06-04 10:05:00	Look at their history. The only people round like that these days are called dictators. Well I guess the originals were until they got a crown. All the slaughtering that went on - even each other, one giant bloodfest over power and now that's all forgotten it's all OK to have someone like that. As for their money versus what they get given, where did it come from? They still own stuff they pinched from other countries. It's a bit off really.	pctek (84)

I wouldn't get your knickers in such a twist about it. The poms certainly seem to be enjoying all the pomp and ceremony and a hell of a lot of people from other countries are to. Having just read the book: The Great Controversy, you are dead right mike, there was also the recent TV program, Elizabeth 1 and Mary Queen of Scots, catholic versus anglican. She shouldnt stand down and let Charlie (who is a right charlie) on the throne, he will get there in time unless he passes it on to Willy (which would be the right thing to do). The pomp and ceremony she creates brings pride and unity to the UK people, she along with the Queens and Kings before her play a huge part in what makes up the UK. Most people I have met from the UK have a huge amount of pride for their country - something that lacks in New Zealand and will never have (or unity). I hope she has many more years in her yet. I'm no fan of royalty, but I will say that commercially speaking, the frosty old sheila is very good business indeed for Britain, in fact I'd say she is a much better investment than the Olympic Games, and gives the same fiscal returns year after year. It will go on for a lot longer too if Charlie decides to pass on it and sends the younger generation in to bat early. A stable Monarchy is very rare in today's age and I think only Holland is as reliable, though not such a good earner. 1278946	2012-06-05 20:51:00	The Crown Estate, the royal lands dating from 1066, are worth around £7.3 billion and generate £304 million (2008/9) in revenue a year which is handed back to the Government as payment in return for the £38.2 million per year (2009/10 down 7% from £41 million in 2008) cost of running the monarchy. This arrangement dates from George III who gave up the right to the income in return for the Civil List paid to members of the Royal Family. It has been announced that this will be changed in 2013 to a Sovereign Support Grant based on a percentage of the income from the Crown Estate.	globe (11482)
