2012-05-29 09:14:00 | My point exactly ;) In fact I heard Auckland for the better part won't get it until 2014 / 2015? That's why I suggested Auckland wouldn't specifically be the best place to hold three events on FTTH :D Ah, got ya. We want to do loads more across the country. Suggest the Aucklanders turn out in force so we continue them nationwide :)

2012-05-29 11:20:00 | It seems that the government signed different contracts with Chorus to the other UFB providors! I wish the government had gone natiowide with other providers ! Bugger Chorus. Telecom and Chorus always outwit the government when it comes to this sort of thing. More bandwith on the sub sea cable would be good also. Roll on that second cable.

2012-05-29 12:19:00 | Nope. 5mbps flat rate. it was 1 or 2mbps that was only $100 cheaper .... Anyways, Quentin, do you have any details of these events?

2012-05-29 12:23:00 | I still think this sort of thing is pointless given people will simply chew through the same amount of data in less time. I'd be happy with copper and 10mbps or whatever if it gave consistent service with no cap.

2012-05-29 21:11:00 | Well at least it's good to see the likes of Orcon offering larger data caps, such as their 200GB and 1,000GB plans at an affordable price. Working for a smaller ISP on a 3-month contract recently I tried to convince them to re-do their plans, this was literally the week before Orcon announced their new plans, I also found out that there's about 3 data "groups" that most consumers fall into. The problem for an ISP is obviously not over-subscribing their bandwidth by too much, as many Slingshot and Telstraclear customers are now finding out. Xnet has also been a huge offender in that area in the past, though recently they've opted more for a 'pay-per-gb' model which has allowed them to improve. The thing you'll find is unless you're doing a large amount of HD video, it's actually pretty darn hard to chew through 200GB every month...

Just confirming dates - will post details on Twitter and Facebook next week. We will do three events, one for residential users, ones for businesses and one for the education sector. All will involve a free breakfast :) Thanks |

2012-05-30 02:38:00 | Just as an aside - VDSL2 has been available in my Hamilton suburb for ages and no one has tried to advertise/ inform or sell this service. Bit of a wasted effort, I think. | Fishb8 (484) | |
2012-05-30 02:51:00 | Actually just quietly VDSL cards have been installed over most of the country as part of network upgrades over the last couple of years, it's just that ISPs haven't really offered much in the way of plans as yet. I think modem availability is one possible issue and the need for better backhaul capacity before they could deal with the increased network demand is another. It has the potential to compete with fibre depending on price, perhaps they are holding off until the fibre pricing is sorted to see where that leaves VDSL in the picture.
