1278676 2012-06-01 04:07:00 I think the best is the on-going AA - Caltex loyalty deal. A minimum spend of $40 earns you $0.06 a litre discount that can be accumulated, with the total amount having a cut off date of two months.

For the maximum discount, I buy my petrol in $40 increments, and usually do that about 9 times in the two month period. The accumulated discount is 9 x $0.06 = $0.54/ litre, and is applied to a fuel purchase of up to 50L maximum. That makes my discount 50 litres x 0.54 discount = $27.00, which is not too shabby.

Any Caltex shop has an instant membership card (free), and if you're an AA member, you can use that card.

The per litre discount can also be earned with any number of other retailers, that are being added to all the time. (No, I don't work for either the AA or Caltex :) ).

1278677 2012-06-01 04:25:00 Interesting how everyone gets excited over a few cents decrease on a supermarket voucher (not the new spend $200 decrease), but if petrol goes down a few cents it's no big deal.

Actually it isn't anyway. I fill my car, $90 or so, so a couple of $ off doesn't thrill me too much.

1278678 2012-06-01 05:14:00 Well yep, funny eh .. I always tell my mum for it but she still does it, chasing that $40 to get the 4c voucher, if we are off, she would buy stuff like toilet papers, like 2x 6 pack.

Could just take the bus, or do your shoppings/outings in a single/fewer trips.

We fill 40L to get our 2x flybuys, could do 20L but more fuss. 40x 4c = $1.60 oh yah .... (not).

1278679 2012-06-01 05:31:00 I don't bother with the discount stuff at all. The amount of time you spend mucking around spending enough here or there, it's not worth it for a few $$. You can drive gently for a week and save more. And some people (not all) might even be worse off, with the extra running around and buying extra things that they may not have done in the first place. Not worth the hassle IMO. wratterus (105)
1278680 2012-06-01 05:47:00 That's why we only do a month shopping at a time when the big savings are on, the rest of the time we don't bother chasing the 4c vouchers as they are a waste gary67 (56)
1278681 2012-06-01 05:49:00 +1 i throw the fuel vouchers in the bin. And flybuys, you have to spend tens of thousands to get a quarter of a playstation. and carry another piece of plastic in your wallet. PITA. flybuys should be built in to your eftpos, but i still wouldnt use it Gobe1 (6290)
1278682 2012-06-01 06:06:00 Flybuys? Who needs them - I can get all the flies I want for nothing. R2x1 (4628)
1278683 2012-06-01 06:51:00 When we shop at Countdown, New World is not near us, oh yeah there is a new one now for Flybuys right ... but far too $$. We however use our credit cards to get National Bank cashback rewards. I use my CC to get some AirNZ points. Spending shrewdly and I guess for 12 months I may get a return trip to AKL grabaseat :lol better than nothing. I use my card to go overseas once or twice a year using grabaseat specials. We pretty much just buy what is on special ... and treat the points as bonus, most of our points come from petrol not me, but the others my folks going out and back home etc .. We got things like a mandolin vegetable cutter, or a little appliance like a heart beat monitor. That's about it. Now that I am doing a few papers at uni, per month I may earn $2 Airpoint Dollars.

Contact Energy has flybuys too but we found them too $$$.... Mitre 10 helps now and then we they wanna do some renovation.

1278684 2012-06-01 07:02:00 Let’s face it, we’re being screwed. :angry

I’ve just got back from Aus travelling through two States and never paid over $1:38 a litre for petrol. I saw a few BP stations at a $1:48 but didn’t see any queues.

Then, my daughter there pays 19c a unit for electricity and I pay 27c. We get ours from Hydro and the Dams and infrastructure has paid for themselves God knows how many times over. Aus have to mine the coal, transport the coal, process the coal and then reticulate the electricity they produce over a zillion Km’s and can do it 8c a unit cheaper and still make plenty.

Further, food and clothing it seams is miles cheaper, probably because they have no GST on most food and 10% on everything else.

Some of you will ask why the hell I don’t live there if I think it’s so great?

Well, I’m a third generation Kiwi on one side and a fourth generation on the other, so the roots are well established. However, I have encouraged the rest of the crew to “Abandon Ship” and they have listened. Now there is only my wife and I to hop in the last lifeboat.

Oh well. :(

1278685 2012-06-01 07:05:00 What for, the prices to rise even further? Actually, they have dropped 4c per litre recently havent they? I'm sure it was 2.19 and now it is 2.15.

I left this post for 24 hours to see what kind reaction it gets, part of an evil plan after reading some moaning on another forum abiut the prices not changing oil price blah blah blah.

Edit:- It took 2 pages though to get the reaction I missed while posting this :)

Anyways interesting responses lets crack a few :)

I personally try to save as much as I can by driving style and simple maintainance the most effective for us recently was getting ourselves the Diesel version of the same car! The cost saving per km including RUCs has been 10c per km on average, So every 100kms thats $10 saved. 1300kms and the additional Rego cost is paid for! benefit for us is we budget on the petrol car and quids in with the diesel use.

Fuel savings at the pump! Well our local servo dont take vouchers and is more expensive than the National Price! Combated that with a Fuel Card costs us $12 per year but saving on the pump price plus a 5.1 cent discount on petrol saves a whole lot more. So those 4c supermarket and even those 6 cents ones are redundant if we go to the next nearset BP plus they dont have 95 octane so pointless putting in 98 with another 8c added to the pump price. The Fuel Card is called Rural Fuel btw.

In saying that Diesel the discount is only 1c with the fuel card so I do check the internet for the price we can expect to pay on our bill before filling up! So pretty much I hardly bother with supermarket dockets unles mega 20c/30c savings and then only on a Full tank with couple gerrys in the boot.

Couple of weeks ago we went on a longish journey for us! Filled up in Rotovegas used a 30c voucher for 100 litres of Diesel and saved $30 on the pump price which was lower than at home. Thats a big saving and funny enough paid for the trip.

Now onto the AA smartfuel! As an AA member might as well use it but not religously, Couple months back found myself in BK whilst on the road for lunch! used the 3 visits at BP to save 12c per litre on 50 litres! Thats where you need to be clever with the Smartfuel card ONLY buy 50 litres. Oh and thats instead of the Fuel card!

Now Flybuys! Well since our local supermarket is New World and we visit Mitre 10 a lot plus our BNZ homeloan is linked to Flybuys might as well grab them. No z stations near here to make it worthwhile besides got a fuel card. Current Flybuys tally over 1000 and we have had a fair bit of Flybuys that gain is something for nothing effectively.

So really these promotion are worthwhile if you use them! Might not be mega amounts but they soon mount up.

Not a lot you can do about the price unless you take advantage of the deals! And to be honest if I can maximise the saving and stretch that dollar out further then its all good.
