1278118 2012-05-29 03:38:00 I think there needs to be more info, at least give a rough est. of the prices what a customer may end up paying to set it up (and for companies to sort out who pays for those cabling). And, what happens to copper wire. If we move out, they don't use the Internet and have heard from one that the copper wires gets pulled out. Or likewise, if someone purchases/rents a house and just want a phoneline.

Maybe in a year when more companies get onboard ..

1278120 2012-05-29 04:23:00 Hi Nomad,
Quentin from Orcon here. Installs for many people will be free until the end of the year.
If you are in a Chorus area (and if you got the Netguide brochure I am guessing you are), then you will likely be eligible for a free install.
Best thing to do is drop the team a line on 0800 13 7000 and talk through all the options and issues.
Video of an install here: www.youtube.com
In answer to your second question, currently the copper wire is being left in.
Thanks!

1278121 2012-05-29 04:39:00 Hi Quentin,
Good to see you back.

Unfortunately, most people *can't* get Fibre until after the end of the year, only a very small percentage will fall in to this bracket of being eligible this year. That's why it's such an interesting discussion point, is the actual *legit* cost.

No doubt most ISP's would be keen to lock people in for XYZ time-frame if they're subsidizing the installation themselves after the end of the year? I think most people wouldn't mind this, personally speaking.

1278122 2012-05-29 04:56:00 Hi Chilling_Silence,
Absolutely agree with you - we really need to see some clear prices so people know what to expect post Dec 2012.
But - if you can get fibre this year, and can get a free install, I would strongly suggest people consider it.
Gosh - I wish I could.
Orcon is going to be hosting some free events to explain fibre next month - will post details on our Facebook page, so keep an eye out.
So far we have three in Auckland that we will be running, and we'll be headed along to events in Hamilton and Wanganui as well.
If anyone has any specific questions, fire them my way and I'll endeavor to answer them (or find someone here that can).
Thanks!

PS - my previous post isn't displaying for me, not in moderation limbo is it?

1278123 2012-05-29 05:25:00 Sorry, right you are, I hadn't noticed it was pending moderation, presumably coz of the link. Forum software gets ansy about links in the first few posts....

Might I suggest Auckland is probably not the best place for it considering Auckland isn't part of the planned rollout this year? ;-)

I can get Fibre, have been able to for years in Te Atatu Peninsula, but just not through the UFB programme... So it's full-price stuff from FX Networks I believe?

Maybe, when do they envisage mainstream ISPs like Telecom will be able to offer UFB to customers. About customers getting rough estimates in installation. And finally, what would happen to copper wire. What would happen to those who just want a telephone line, do they need to downgrade and re-install a copper wire thru Telecom ...

Orcon has handed out their pamphlets saying it's available however when we rang up they said not yet. They also said the installation prices needs to be quoted by a engineer ... They couldn't give me a rough estimate. Also they said the copper wires would be pulled. Which one wonders what would happen to the telephone only customers do they need to pay UFB just for that.

1278125 2012-05-29 06:35:00 Chilling_Silence - the year one and two plans for UFB roll-out have been published, and Te Atatu Peninsula isn't on it I am afraid.
Nomad - Can you please email me quentin.reade@team.orcon.net.nz with your address and I'll double check for you. If you are eligible, install will be free. To date - as far as we are aware - no copper has been removed as part of a UFB install. The LFCs *may* do this at a later date, but haven't been.

My point exactly ;) In fact I heard Auckland for the better part won't get it until 2014 / 2015? That's why I suggested Auckland wouldn't specifically be the best place to hold three events on FTTH :D

1278127 2012-05-29 09:06:00 Hell I'd pay the extra to get signed up if I had to...

I could get it now if I really wanted, $1500 installation (roughly) and $1100 a month for a 5mbps unlimited up / down pipe. It's the monthly that's the killer...
I really hope you meant 50mbps?
