1278108 2012-05-28 21:55:00 I read this:
www.nzherald.co.nz

We had the Orcon brochure now for some weeks. We might not get it due to connections charges. Anyone know how much that is? The article seems to have issues of who pays for the cabling to the house and then the resident may need to pay other stuff to get in it connected and the ATAs right? The guys outside have installed the cable, but no one has installed the cable under our driveway. They are now just permanently resealling the roadside.

1278109 2012-05-28 22:58:00 Hell I'd pay the extra to get signed up if I had to...

I could get it now if I really wanted, $1500 installation (roughly) and $1100 a month for a 5mbps unlimited up / down pipe. It's the monthly that's the killer...

1278110 2012-05-28 23:22:00 I'm keen but my suburb doesn't feature on the plan for this year so who knows when it'll reach my neck of the woods. dugimodo (138)

Yes gary67, apparently the string connecting the two paper cups can't be joined again (too many knots, you see) :D

they should upgrade it to fishing twine as a cheaper alternative to copper it even looks similar to fibre

Oooh, good thinking! Actually twine is a fibre, isn't it?

We are just north of the red zone on this map, we may be able to run to it but no one is confirming yet

1278117 2012-05-29 03:21:00 I wouldn't call it a con job, fibre has many advantages which is why telcos have been using it for backhaul for years.
I'd agree that DSL when working properly is good enough for most people, but fibre is still better.

Advantages (and no I don't work for them)
Fibre doesn't interfere with other fibres - copper speed is affected by other broadband connections nearby
Immune to common sources of interference
Will not suffer from dry joints or corrosion
Has a much higher theoretical bandwidth and can scale to much higher speeds than are initially being offered
Is in no danger from electrical storms
should be much more reliable and have fewer faults than copper.
