52897 2002-06-07 02:25:00 Read the aritcle in June 2002 PC World on 'Secure your small office' page 48. I under stand that the Nokia M1122 Modem has a degree of fire wall protection. Does the Symantic fire wall provide more protection? I so how? Please could you expand on how to install the Symantic fire wall with the Nokia M1122. Has the Symantic fire wall been tested for security? Guest (0)
52898 2002-06-07 03:53:00 Sorry I cannot answer your questions about the degree of firewall protection provided by the Nokia modem, but Kiwitas posted this URL the other day:

www.pcflank.com

It gives an indication of the value of different firewalls.

If you have not already shelled out for Symantec, I think you will find adequate firewall protection from freeware. I have been using Sygate Personal Firewall (freeware for home use), and testing my protection shows that it is closed to the internet and leakproof as well. I found Sygate simple to install and use. I use a Nokia Ni500 modem and Windoze XP Pro.

Other people swear by ZoneAlarm, but I swapped to Sygate after reading about it in an article in PC World because I found ZoneAlarm clunky and annoying.

You can download Sygate Personal Firewall from soho.sygate.com and installation on your PC is simple. So what if your modem gives adequate protection and installing another firewall is a 'belt and braces' approach if it is free?

52899 2002-06-07 04:01:00 Not an expert in the matter, but your Nokia ADSL router will probably offer NAT (network address translation) which will serve quite well for incoming packets, effectively shielding your pc from the net, but my definition of a firewall would be one that stops unwanted traffic from either direction. Unsure that NAT can do that, hence you need a firewall so you can stop unwanted outward activity.

I use McAffee firewall with an Alcatel ADSL router, works OK. It pops up for every program that wants to access the web and will learn your choices. In the end you have to know enough about what you trust on your PC to access the web. Its probably got nothing to do with your M1122 at the end of the day?

52900 2002-06-07 05:02:00 I personally use Zone Alarms which I find very good.
What ever you use, use this site to test it. grc.com
