52849 2002-06-07 00:20:00 Can anyone tell me how to stop my hardrive allocation letters from swapping around. I have two physical hardrives both partitioned in half as well as a zip drive.
Often when using the PC I loose contact with drives when using desktop shortcuts because drive letters have been reallocated.
I'm using Win98 OS.

52850 2002-06-07 01:10:00 ESP again!

A. How are the drives physically configured?

B. How are the drives partitioned - and what type of partitions?

C. Explain your problem in better detail - 'lose contact' is what you can do with a child in a shopping complex.

52851 2002-06-07 01:53:00 Piss off Merlin.

I have followed your recent partitioning threads with growing contempt, but hesitated to get involved because I knew you would not say anything worthhile reading in your reply.

If you are so adverse to helping people, then don't. This is marketed in PCWorld as a forum where newbies can come without fear of being shunned.

There is no excuse for berating Simon like that. you could attempt to give solutions, ask nicely for more info, or shut-up. I don't care which you do, but if helping people is such a hardship, then go away.

Please do not reply with that bulls**t about your talents and how much you should be being paid. I quote 'Press-F1 is a NO-COST, public SERVICE...' I agree some posts are very unclear - I made comments about this in regard to one post which was in the form - my pc doesn't work, what is wrong - (no exaggeration), but Simon has given enough info to at least start a diagnosis, and dialogue to help him out.

Change your attitude, or please do not return.

Simon - I am sorry I cannot help you. I am also sorry that your thread is now probably going to be hijacked for worthless debate with Merlin. I will refrain from replying as I have nothing more to say, and do not want to listen to Merlin's tirade. If you find you get no replies, just post again in a new thread.

52852 2002-06-07 01:55:00 C:/ & E:/ share a 20mB drive about 50/50.
D:/ & F:/ share a 2mB drive about 50/50
G:/ is the zip drive.

Often when I go from working on one publication to another - say a pdf file and start on a excel file - which I enter from shortcuts on the desktop, I find that instead of excel being on F:/ it will have moved to G:/ or D:/, it can be any combination of swapping in any program. A re-boot doesn't usually fix it. A cold restart often does.
As an example:
When the problem occurs ... Let's say I want to go into an Excel spreadsheet - I doubleclick the shortcut icon and get a message saying the file can't be found. But instead of it searching in D:/ the shortcut is now pointing to G:/ or elsewhere. I have tried changing the DMA settings in Device Mgr but no difference. Hope that helps.

52853 2002-06-07 07:08:00 unforunatly unlike win2k, win98 won't let you asign drive letters per drive. however help is at hand in a program called letterassigner.

sorry i don't have a url for it but it was on pcworld disk(i think).

52854 2002-06-07 07:47:00 There, I knew that someone would know.

You could probably search the PC World download area, but the easy way will be to search for 'assigner' with google.co.nz. The second match from that is the PC World download page ...

Isn't technology marvellous? It creates such *interesting* problems. And, rarely, solves them.

You might finish up giving the HDs fixed letters, but it looks to be the solution. Try it on the Zip drive first, but it refers to labels (which are associated with physical disks ... and you change Zip disks), so it will probably be the hard drives.

52855 2002-06-08 23:20:00 Win98 does allow peramnant drive letter allocation!
my zip drive is 'Z' how?
my comp > properties > device manager > disk drives > select Zip drive > (right click) properties > settings

Here we find a pair of drop down menus allowing one to choose say reserved drive letter start Z, end Z,
