52841 2002-06-07 00:04:00 4 PC's running win2000. Internet access is avaliable on all and up untill about 3hrs ago all computers could see and access each other. Have reinstalled windows once already to get computers to connect which works for a short time and then several reboots later PC2 has internet but is not connected to network- shared resources unavaliable 'network path not found' and PC2 can't see workgroup or itself as a computer on the network but can be seen by other computers just not accessed. Thanks for any help. Urgently required. Guest (0)
52842 2002-06-07 01:05:00 A. Replace the network cable and failing that, the network card in PC 2

B. Test from PC 2 using a DOS boot disk with appropriate network card drivers.

C. What versions of 2k? Mixed or all either Professional or Server?

52844 2002-06-07 08:04:00 Ok, sorry about the early morning babbling with insufficiant detail that Erin and i have offered. (yes Erin W and I are working on the same network) I shall offer a full description!

Firstly, i think i should mention that @ 3:00AMish we gave up trying to fix the problem machine nicely, and I reformatted it for the second time while Erin fell asleep gently snoring on the floor behind me. Once the machine was back up, i got all pleased with myself about how everything was all happy again, it was sharing, and was working as it should. When Erin woke up, i announced that all was good, excepted much compliments from her, only to eat my words @ 7:00ish, when the problem was permanantly back. Internet access was again perfect via LAN, but other than that, the plug might as well have been pulled between Erins machine and the others. We have since bought a new card, and seen the same results.

Heres the networks brief description:

All machines are running win2000pro,

machine 1 'erin' (the problem) has a shared zip drive (sometimes) and a shared folder that the others have full access too, (atleast that is the idea) Erins primary purpose is the graphix machine, it also has the cd-burner

2. 'john' is the internet gateway, it has the IP of 196.168.0.1, it is the only machine with fixed IP internet access is by dial-up to xtra.
'John' also has the main shared folder area for the rest of the network, this part is all working fine.

3. A laptop, whose name escapes me, all is fine, it is only there as a guest.

4. 'office' another machine that is there mainly for adminastrative purposes. all is good there, it can access all it needs, apart from 'erin' of course.

Security is allmost nonexsistant, as it is a family biz of a very open nature, and everything is so open anyway

The workgroup is 'mooted'

This is the same network/problem being inquired about by me a few posts ago here; idg.net.nz

52845 2002-06-07 08:21:00 Use a cable from between another two machines.

Btw - what type of network? Coax or ethernet? If ethernet, what is it being run through?

Also, try disconnecting the zip drive and removing the drivers - reformat, reinstall whatever - and see if the problem recurs. If not, search Omega's site for a solution.
If the problem recurs start swapping parts from one of the other machines till the problem appears on another machine.

This relies on the premise that the network addressing is correct - something you have not displayed.

52846 2002-06-07 08:43:00 It might not be a network problem.

Have a look at the Hardrive swapping' (Simon S) thread just above this ...

If you set up your shared folders, then inserted a Zip disk, clever Win2k might have changed the disk letters on Erin's machine. The other machines can't find the shared things because they *aren't there*. They've been 'moved'.

Plausible?

tweak'e and I found a 'close to home' fix for Simon S.

52847 2002-06-07 11:32:00 umm you didnt mention the specifications of each computer...like what CPU, how much RAM like that...

I think its got something to do with 'Browser Election of Win2k' go to microsoft website to learn more of this... as you and your colleauge mentions that it works only for a short time...so i think its the 'browser election' thing...just type in the search or advanced search 'browser election of win2k', as you need to switch off other machine not to participate in the browser election part.

and hopefully the permissions you set are right and just use static ip address in each machine, use subnet mask of 255.255.255.0..and for machine1, the laptop, office machine to access the internet you need to have the default gateway which is John's ip address.

52848 2002-06-10 03:57:00 all permissions are and have been same as above for awhile now. In fact they have been like that since the last time the whole thing was working.

Will check out win2k problem later- must do other work for next couple of days before boss shoots me.

Thanks
Erin
