| 52885 | 2002-06-07 01:08:00 | I've started using an old model aircraft flightsim which runs in DOS: the transmitter control box plugs into COM1 (using IRQ4). If I get into DOS through 'Start, Programs, MSDOS' the program runs well, but every so often it pauses, and tells me it cannot find the transmitter, presumably the computer is responding to another interrupt of some sort. If I shut down and restart in DOS mode the flightsim program starts but it fails to detect the transmitter on COM1. Is there a way that I can eliminate the pauses? Or maybe there is a way I can do a 'restart in DOS' and make it recognise the transmitter input and that will alleviate my problem? | Guest (0) | ||
| 52886 | 2002-06-07 01:45:00 | More info needed, what operating system for instance? Later version of windows (xp)does not have DOS, only an emulation..... If you give more details then I am sure it will be easily suggested how to kick ito pure DOS, if it exists... tj |

Also, try going to the directory in which the program is kept and create a shortcut for the program. Drag this shortcut onto the desktop, right click and select 'Properties'. Have a look through the options and see if there is anything else that may alleviate the problem. I can't help any more, but if I knew the version of windows you had I might be able to... |

I have an Iomega Zip drive plugged into the printer port at the same time, with an HP printer piggy-backed onto it. Maybe I need to detach everything before I run the flightsim? It would be a little more convenient not to though. Mike Shores |

It might be a good idea to get a bootable floppy with DOS6.22 or earlier on it to run the programme. You could try booting from a W98 restart floppy: iut will be just DOS, although the latest version. But I think that you get just the same when you do the F8 start. If you open a DOS window from W98, you leave all the other 'essential' rubbish running. It all uses CPU cycles, and will cause delays in a 'realtime' programme. Check in Device Manager to see what is using which interrupt ... I think MS have learned to leave IRQ4 and 3 alone because they have enough troubles with modems and mice conflicting. |
